Müssen nur wollen

Es ist gar nicht mal so leicht, im Jahr 2023 noch einen knackigen Rezensions-Einstieg zu einem neuen In-Flames-Album herzuzaubern. Was einerseits daran liegt, dass sämtliche historischen Abrisse rund um die Band bereits zu genüge breitgetreten wurden. Die seit über zwei Jahrzehnten währende Abkehr von den Wurzeln der Göteborger Schule. Die für Frühfans irritierende Phase Mitte der 2000er-Jahre, als die Band mit dem Nu-Metal flirtete. Und natürlich der Abgang von Gründungsmitglied Jesper Strömblad, der ein orientierungsloses 2010er-Jahrzehnt einleitete. Andererseits macht die Band um Sänger Anders Fridén auch keinerlei Anstalten, hier und da mal ein bisschen Abwechslung, ein bisschen frischen Wind einzustreuen. Album, Tour, Album, Tour. Der graue musikalische Alltag. Auch das 2019er-Werk "I, the mask" wusste kaum Neues beizutragen, war aber zumindest ein wenig energetischer als seine Vorgänger. Große Erwartungshaltungen sind bei "Foregone", dem mittlerweile 14. Studioalbum des Fünfers, längst nicht mehr gegeben. Eigentlich kann die Überraschung nur positiv sein.

Letztendlich gestaltet sich "Foregone" aber wie seine Vorgänger als ein typisches "neuzeitliches" Werk der Schweden – mit allen guten und eben auch nicht so guten Facetten. Aber der Reihe nach: Zunächst mal sei gesagt, dass die Vorab-Single "The great deceiver" als Brett der allerfeinsten Sorte und einer der besten In-Flames-Songs seit "Come clarity" getrost gegen das Frühwerk der Band anstinken kann. "Bend the truth / To fit your opinion / Another excuse / Another lie", brüllt Fridén wut- und energiegeladen im Refrain hinaus in die von Verschwörungstheorien und Querdenkern geplagte Welt, während die Instrumentalfraktion rund um Gitarren-Chef Björn Gelotte in Höchstgeschwindigkeit loshämmert. "The sky is on fire and the angels cry." Genau so hat ein In-Flames-Song zu klingen, genau so etwas möchte man als Fan doch hören. Gut zu wissen, dass sie es noch können. Auch "State of slow decay" gibt sich dynamisch, hart und tight – selbst ein paar eingestreute Doom-Anleihen gönnt sich das Stück hier und da. Auf der ruhigen Seite weiß zudem noch "Bleeding out" als angezerrte Halbballade zu gefallen, die sich ihren Melodiebögen ziemlich hemmungslos hingibt und gar nicht erst den Anschein erweckt, die Headbanger-Fraktion abholen zu wollen. Why not.

In Flames können also nach wie vor das abliefern, was ihnen aus alten Zeiten noch immer als Rückenwind dient. Nur leider lässt auch "Foregone" wieder an allen Ecken und Enden die Inspiration, die Dringlichkeit, den Mut zu Neuem vermissen. So gerät beispielsweise das Titeltrack-Duo aus "Foregone pt. 1" und "Foregone pt. 2" äußerst enttäuschend: Substanz, Tiefe und Konzept werden hier zwar angedeutet, allerdings sind beide Songs letztendlich nur zahnlose Kopien der schon längst ausgenudelten In-Flames-Formel. In "Pure light of mind" versucht sich Fridén gar am Falsett-Gesang, was als Abwechslung ja grundsätzlich zu begrüßen wäre, wenn der schwachbrüstige Refrain und der altbackene Sound des Songs nicht jegliche Ambitionen zunichte machen würden. Das letzte Albumdrittel weiß dann schlussendlich gar nichts Neues mehr beizutragen und verbreitet eher Langeweile als Inbrunst. Schade, dass es In Flames auch nach vier Jahren Studio-Pause nicht so recht gelingen mag, einfach mal etwas Frisches abzuliefern. So langsam wird es gefährlich gemütlich in der schwedischen Comfort Zone.

Frontman Anders Fridén states, "Going into the Foregone sessions, we wanted to make a record that was heavily guitar-driven, and that had a strong foundation between the bass and drums. We still approached our songwriting the same way, as we always have, as a juxtaposition between melody and aggression. That's the DNA of our music. From the lyrical end of things, there was no shortage of inspiration to draw from, especially the concept of time."

He continues, "Humanity as a whole was forced to slow down and take breather. In that break, many of us spent time evaluating and reprioritizing. Time is a constant, but what do we do with it and how we perceive it varies. Especially now looking at where the world seems to be headed faster than ever before."

Fridén finishes, "It's crazy that after everything we are still here and on our fourteenth album. I feel that we've found a great balance between the past, the present and the future with Forgone. This is a new era of In Flames!"

The visualizer was created by Oleg Rooz. The Ukrainian graphic designer used groundbreaking AI technology to create the visuals. As one of the first bands relying on AI for a music video, In Flames remain on the cutting edge.
