Buchstaben über dem Staat

Was genau an der Musik von Sunny Day Real Estate, Texas Is The Reason oder Jimmy Eat World ist eigentlich "Emo"? So ganz wird man sich wohl nie einig sein, welche Zutaten jenem Genre seine einst hippen und alsbald eher belächelten drei Buchstaben beschert haben. E, M und O stehen logischweise für das Emotionale in der Musik, würden Schlauberger nun argumentieren. Und Praktiker wie auch theoretisch gelagerte Verfechter musikalischer Kultur würden entgegnen: Sind Emotionen nicht vielmehr Triebfeder aller Kunst- bzw. Klangschaffenden? Wie überhaupt sollte Musik entstehen können, wenn nicht aufgrund von Gefühlen oder Regungen, die ein Künstler aus seinem Inneren heraus dem Publikum und der Welt mitteilen möchte?

Ob Tiny Moving Parts den hier beschriebenen Gedankengang selbst einmal bewusst nachvollzogen haben? Wohl kaum, auch wenn die nach wie vor junge Band von eingangs erwähnten Urvätern des Midwest-Emo inspiriert wurde, hat sie ihren Stil mittlerweile mit großer Souveränität etabliert. Verwunderlich ist das nicht, da die Truppe mit "Breathe" nun bereits ihr fünftes Album vorlegt. Als wohl nicht unbewusst platzierte Reminiszenz an die Szene und zur Annerkennung in Richtung der musikalischen Vorfahren startet "The Midwest sky" mit typisch flirrenden Emo-Gitarren und prescht zwischen diversen Mini-Gitarrenbögen samt Haken, Ösen und Geschrei nach vorn, dass es eine echte Freude ist. "Bloody nose" atmet das Chaos der alten Taking Back Sunday, verhebt sich bei diesem Experiment aber erstaunlicherweise überhaupt nicht und garniert sich selbst sogar mit einem "Badadada"-Part, der keinewegs peinlich ist.

"Soft spot" und das feine "Polar bear" operieren mehr im Midtempo, bieten neben gekonnten Breaks, kleinen akzentuierten Soli und Mitschrei-Part jedoch ein Paket, das man ebenso als drängende, kompositorisch ambitionierte und ebenso eingängige Rockmusik etikettieren könnte, die ihren Pulsschlag auch durch popmusikalische Elemente erhöht. Letzteres gilt insbesondere für das poppunkige "I can't shake" und für die Auskopplung "Medicine", die mit leichten elektronischen Sprenkeln und Ohrwurm-Refrain aufwartet. Kompositorische Wucht und eingängige Glückseligkeit in Einklang – diese Band zeigt, wie gut das zusammenpassen kann. Und dennoch ist der To-Do-Listen-Aufschrieb "Durchbruch" für Tiny Moving Parts trotz aller Qualität ihres Songwritings noch nicht abzuhaken – Kollege Smeets bemängelte dies zurecht im Kontext des Vorgängers "Swell". Höchst verwunderlich ist das vor allem wegen vor Power platzender Kleinode wie "Icicles (Morning glow), das sich ob all der Unruhe und Strahlkraft auch nicht von einem dezenten Glockenspiel im Hintergrund aus der Bahn werfen lässt. Ebendies werden Tiny Moving Parts ihrem Song gleichtun. Garantiert.

Hat ein wenig länger gedauert als bei den beiden Vorgängern, aber mittlerweile hat mich das Album doch noch gekriegt.
Vor allem 'The Midwest Sky' und 'I Can't Shake' sind richtig toll (auch wenn der Refrain von 'The Midwest Sky' vielleicht ein wenig zu sehr das Ende von 'Wishbone' kopiert)

Album ist sehr viel poppiger (seichter) als die beiden Vorgänger. Nur noch wenig Gefrickel, allerdings steht ihnen auch das sehr gut zu Gesicht. Braucht aber noch mehrere Durchgänge.

Hopeless Records is excited to announce the signing of Tiny Moving Parts. They’ve shared “Medicine” - the first single off the band’s forthcoming album "breathe", out September 13th, 2019. Fans can watch the music video for “Medicine” here and pre-order the new album "breathe" here.



Speaking to the track, Dylan Mattheisen said: “‘Medicine’ is about everything around you falling apart. When people come and go in a lifetime, I try to focus on the happiness and guidance they’ve provided me instead of the sadness of them leaving”.

Mattheisen is afraid of death. That’s nothing new. In fact, it’s a fear that has flowed, in one form or another, through every album the Benson, Minnesota band has released so far. But on "breathe", the band’s fifth proper full-length, it’s become more obvious and prevalent than ever. At the same time, this set of songs is designed to help quell those anxieties, both for Mattheisen and the dedicated following he and his cousins – brothers Matt and Billy Chevalier – have built up since forming the band in 2008.

“I just feel as time goes on that everything means more and more”, says Mattheisen. “So this record covers things we’ve talked about in the past – the fear of dying, losing someone through moving away or the passing of someone – but it concentrates more on the positives, and being happy things happened instead of sad they’re taken away. It’s about finding that mindset to keep on powering through”.
Written in between tours since the release of their last record, "Swell", released in January 2018, "breathe" finds the band moving forward sonically as much as they are pushing through emotionally. Recorded with longtime collaborator Greg Lindholm, who oversaw seven songs, and established pop producer John Fields (Jimmy Eat World, Goo Goo Dolls, All Time Low), who handled the other three, "breathe" is full of the same emotionally-driven blend of math-rock, pop-punk and emo that they’ve made their own, but it also branches out.

"breathe" is more than just an album. It’s an emotional crutch. It’s moral support. It’s the friend we all need at our darkest times. It’s the sound of a band coming to terms with their own mortality, their own anxieties, their own self-doubts. And it’s a reminder that, as long as there are songs sung back as if our lives depend on them, we are never alone.
