Zu jung geblieben

"9" ist in zweierlei Hinsicht etwas Besonderes: Es ist das erste neue Album von Saves The Day seit fünf Jahren. Und es war der Vorsatz von Leadsänger und Songwriter Chris Conley, all die Erinnerungen an seine Zeit in der Band sowie seine Beziehung zur Musik darin festzuhalten. Ein großes Vorhaben, das ihm in der Stimmung des Albums durchaus gelungen ist. Alles wirkt überschäumend, laut, sehr jung. Und genau hier liegt auch das Problem. "9" ist kein Blick zurück, kein Rekapitulieren, sondern mehr ein Nachspielen dieser Zeit. Saves The Day erzählen nicht von den vier Jugendlichen aus New Jersey, die es ganz nach oben geschafft haben, sie klingen so. Und das ist stellenweise eintönig, manchmal sogar anstrengend.

Negativ fallen dabei vor allem Zeilen wie "You know that we love you / And we love what we do" aus dem Opener "Saves The Day" auf. Genauso der Refrain aus "It's such a beautiful world", wo es heißt: "It's such a beautiful world / (...) / We wanna see you at our next show." Diese sehr einfach gehaltenen Lyrics liegen über einfach gehaltener Gitarrenbegleitung und schnellen Beats, die für wenig Abwechslung sorgen. Aber auf dem Album haben sich auch ein paar Ausnahmen versteckt. Dazu gehört "Kerouac and Cassady", ein rhythmisch etwas anders gestalteter Song, der durch die kernigen Gitarrenriffs und den eingängigen Refrain bestimmt wird. Saves The Day zeigen darauf, wie unglaublich cool und rockig sie klingen können, weit weg vom pop-punkigen Ton, der auf "9" vorherrscht.

Ein weiterer herausstechender Song ist "Rendezvous", in dessen Refrain man am ehesten dieses "Was für eine geile Zeit"-Gefühl bekommt, das man erwartet, wenn ein Sänger über die vielen Jahre in der Band seines Lebens schreibt und singt. Da kann man mitgröhlen, sich in den Armen liegen und im Fall von Saves The Day feiern, dass man es geschafft hat. "Rendezvous" ist die Hymne, die Chris Conleys Vorhaben erfüllt.

"9" kann Spaß machen, wenn man es richtig einsetzt. Es würde sich sicher gut auf einer Party zum Tanzen, ohne wirklich hinzuhören, eignen, oder auch als Soundtrack für einen High-School-Film. Aber es ist kein Werk, auf das man fünf Jahre lang warten möchte und auch keins, das die hochgesteckte Ankündigung eines Albums erfüllt, 24 Jahre Bandgeschichte einfangen zu können. Conley wollte seine Beziehung zur Musik darstellen, und vielleicht ist diese einfach noch die des jungen Künstlers von 1994, der seinen Traum vom großen Ruhm durch laute, schnell einschlagende und eben etwas schlichte Songs verwirklicht hat.

Nö, das selbstbetitelte ist eins ihrer besten. 9 ist nicht so stark, hat aber trotzdem seine Momente.

"In Reverie" war leider das letzte halbwegs brauchbare Album.

Saves The Day returned today with “Kerouac & Cassady” - the second single from their highly-anticipated new album "9". “Kerouac & Cassady” is the perfect soundtrack to a Saturday night drive. Each lyric is a callback to a memory from the band’s two decades accumulating memories on tour and even the song’s title is a nod to the beatnik classic "On The Road". It’s a propulsive rock anthem that triggers the sort of adrenaline rush that convinces the listener that anything is possible when they walk out their door on a Saturday night. Saves The Day will be releasing "9", their first new album in five years, on October 26th via Rude Records in partnership with Equal Vision Records. "9" will be Saves The Day’s ninth studio record and contains nine songs that, when listened to together, tells the story of the band from the perspective of its founder, Chris Conley. The album offers this first ever autobiographical look into the band’s history in a way that is as exhaustive as it is poetic and makes the listener a part of the songwriting process. As Conley puts it “This album is the story of Saves The Day and my own personal journey through life, which all unfolded as my relationship with music progressed”. On the surface, "9" chronicles the epic story of a group of kids from New Jersey who realized their dream and became an international sensation. On a deeper level, it shows how Conley “woke up” and became aware of his own consciousness through his relationship with music and the unbelievable adventures it has inspired since he formed the act in 1997.
"9" was produced by Arun Bali and Saves The Day. Bali mixed and engineered the record, as well. Saves The Day consists of Chris Conley (vocalist, guitarist), Arun Bali (guitarist), Rodrigo Palma (bassist), and Dennis Wilson (drummer).

The open verses on “Rendezvous” allow for the subtle twists in composition and Conley’s masterful command of melody to shine. Once they’re drawn in, the song’s massive hook reminds listeners exactly why Saves The Day have had such a profound influence on alternative rock over the past twenty years. Saves The Day have been through a lot over the past two decades: Van accidents, member changes, the emo explosion, and the adventures that carried the act and their fans from adolescence to adulthood. The current lineup of the band, which includes the virtuosic trio of guitarist Arun Bali, bassist Rodrigo Palma and drummer Dennis Wilson, are the band's most consistent lineup to date. They’ve managed to take the musicianship on 9 to stratospheric new heights. “At this point, I've actually dealt with the conflicts and the challenges in a lifelong career in music and now I have the guys that I could do this with forever and I'm living the dream again," Conley explains. Ultimately, 9 is sonic evidence that not only is there a reason we are alive in the world, but it's a miracle that Conley rightfully encourages us to celebrate.
