Willkommen zur Weisheit des Tages, brought to you by Plattentests.de: Zeiten ändern sich. Oder Zeiten ändern Dich? Ach, beides. Was eben gerade noch Gegenwart war, ist eine Sekunde später schon Vergangenheit. Zweite Weisheit des Tages: Lebendig kommt hier keiner raus. Also lieber rein ins Abenteuer, um so viele Erfahrungen wie möglich zu sammeln. Jonny Pierce kann ein Lied davon singen – und macht genau das auch schon seit Jahren. Startete dessen Surf-Rock-Pop-Projekt The Drums 2008 noch als waschechte Band, ist neun Jahre und drei Alben später nur noch der Frontmann übrig. Der hat sich nach der Veröffentlichung des letzten Werkes "Enyclopedia", bei dem Gründungsmitglied Jacob Graham auch noch mit an Bord war, glücklicherweise nicht unterkriegen lassen.

Ganz einfach war das wohl nicht: Zur Trennung vom letzten Bandkameraden kam noch das Ende der Beziehung zu seinem Freund dazu. Noch mehr Veränderung also. Der mittlerweile 33-Jährige hat sie als Chance genutzt, zog sich eine Weile zurück und schrieb "Abysmal thoughts", das vierte Album von The Drums. Mit Unterstützung von Jonathan Schenke (Girl Talk, Parquet Courts) an den Reglern entstand so nach Aussage des Künstlers eine Art vertonte Autobiografie. Und mehr noch: Pierce findet in den zwölf neuen Songs und trotz Alleingang zurück zu alter Form: "Abysmal thoughts" küsst die Sonne, tanzt durch den Regen, umarmt die Melancholie und sucht stets die Hoffnung. Dennoch ist nicht immer ganz klar, ob der New Yorker hier sich selbst und seine Fans anfeuert – oder gar andersrum.

Wie schlimm und schön zugleich die Folge seines Liebeskummers war, zeigt Pierce etwa im nur oberflächlich entspannten "Heart Basel": Das weckt rein musikalisch Erinnerungen an damals, als "The Drums" 2010 das Licht der Welt erblickte, ist thematisch aber viel jünger. Vom Damals-noch-nicht-Ex-Freund, der den Sänger bei der Art-Basel-Veranstaltung in Miami wie einen König behandelte, nur um kurz darauf in alte Muster zu verfallen, geht es weiter zum rasanteren "Shoot the sun down", das den Sommer in einem tosenden Gewitter enden lässt. Überhaupt ist "Abysmal thoughts" von Sturm und Drang geprägt: "Your tenderness" wankt zwischen ordentlich Druck und dampfablassenden Bläsern und ist nicht nur dank dieser Mischung einer der besten The-Drums-Songs überhaupt.

Aber nicht umsonst wurde im Vorfeld angekündigt, wie persönlich das Album sei. So sorgt Pierces hörbarer Herzschmerz größtenteils natürlich für Verzücken, geht hier und da aber auch ziemlich unter die Haut. Während er in der ersten Single "Blood under my belt" zwischen Flehen und Fluchen schwankt, sich selbst die Schuld an allem gibt und immer wieder seine Liebe bekundet, darf man auch als Außenstehender schon mal emotional werden. Fast komplett akustisch hinterfragt derweil "If all we share (means nothing)", was überhaupt echt ist und was nicht. Und wenn Pierce im astreinen Opener "Mirror" auf der Suche nach sich selbst ist und sich im besungenen Spiegel dennoch kaum selbst erkennt, offenbart das viel mehr, als irgendwelche Weisheiten wieder glattbügeln könnten. Eine haben wir trotzdem noch: Nach Regen kommt Sonnenschein. Lass Dich nicht unterkriegen, Jonny!

“Abysmal Thoughts" is the first album where I am taking responsibility for myself. It’s the first album where I look more inward and less outward. It is an album of self exploration. Maybe the problems in my adult life come from a broken place inside of me. Maybe I can’t properly love because I don’t really know who I am. Maybe people leave me because they have no other choice. This entire album felt like intense therapy and 'Mirror' was the first session. My steady anchor through the entire recording process was my dearest friend, Ioanna Gika - she held my hand through all of it and so I thought it fitting to ask her to sing with me on this song.

Across a year and three months of home recording between Los Angeles and his cabin in upstate New York—with the same guitar, synthesizer, drum machine and reverb unit he’s played since the beginning of The Drums—Pierce put together “Abysmal Thoughts.” With help from engineer Jonathan Schenke (Parquet Courts, Mannequin Pussy and more), the result is an unflinching autobiography with Pierce back in full control of the band. He’s back to not just writing all the songs by himself but playing every instrument, too, this time realizing exactly his own personal vision for the band. Not coincidentally, it’s some of the most revelatory work he’s ever done. It is a vivid self-portrait, alive with the hyperdramatic emotional potency of the Smiths, the arch literary pop moves of New Zealanders like the Verlaines and the Clean, and the riotous clatter-punk power of the UK DIY bands of 1979.

As the last album cycle for The Drums finished and his long-term relationship with his former partner dissolved, Pierce took some time away from music altogether in hopes to reconnect with himself and find future inspiration. Determined to make a change, he ended up leaving his longtime home in New York and found himself isolated in a large empty apartment in Los Angeles, all his plans for life and love suddenly in shambles. That hardship and confusion—and the clarity of personality and purpose it inspired—became “Abysmal Thoughts.”

With The Drums’ new record, band founder Jonny Pierce is making the exact album he’s always held in his heart. Of course, this is The Drums, so that heart is broken—but there’s beauty and even bliss in this kind of heartbreak. “I said I wanted to let life happen?” he says. “Well, the universe listened and life began to fuck me real good! But honestly, I make the worst art when I’m comfortable. The stuff that resonates with me the longest—and that resonates with others—is always the stuff that comes out of my misery.”

Now the highs are higher than ever, and the lows absolutely bottomless. The Drums are back, and while there’s a heavy sadness here, Pierce is stronger for fighting through it. “Happiness can be confusing to me,” says Pierce. “It shows up out of nowhere, and before you can even get used to it, it’s vanished. But “Abysmal Thoughts?” I can rely on them—and with the political chaos that is raining down, who knows when these dark feelings will subside?”
