Die Abhänger

Ja, stimmt wirklich: Das ist schon das achte Studioalbum von Dr. Dog, und noch immer interessiert sich hier niemand für diese gesegnete Truppe aus Pennsylvania. Und das in Zeiten, in denen doch so dringend nach einer Band gesucht wird, die Kings Of Leon und Mumford & Sons endlich mal den Sargnagel überreicht. Dr. Dog wären geeignet dafür: sechs Männer mit Bart und Stilbewusstsein, mit abgehangener Musik im Gepäck und ordentlich Groove im Bassbereich. Mit "B-Room" macht die Band nun da weiter, wo der heldenhafte Vorgänger "Be the void" aufgehört hat: mit Woodstock-Folk und Motwon-Rock. Zwölf neue Songs von der Beat-Maschine.

Und genau so geht es auch los: mit einem bequemen Slacker-Rhythmus und einer lockeren Gitarren-Übung. "The truth" ist ein Acid Trip in Slow Motion und damit der nebeligste Song dieser Saison. Kaum hängt man 30 Sekunden in "B-Room", da grinst man auch schon selig. Und das wird sogar noch besser, mit dem aufgekratzten "Broken heart": Mehr Groove hatten die Temptations in den Sechzigern auch nicht unter ihren Fräcken. Dazu gesellen sich noch ein trockenes Dinosaur-Jr.-Solo und ein fieses Becken-Crescendo. Ganz schön was los, in den ersten Minuten von "B-Room".

Was folgt, ist ein jubilierender Ritt durch die letzten 50 Jahre Rockgeschichte: Vom hemdsärmeligen Riffrock ("Rock & Roll") zur psychedelischen Farbenexplosion ("Cuckoo") zum Levon-Helm-Gedächtnis-Chor ("Nellie") sind es nur wenige Minuten. Kaum zu glauben, aber das passt, kommt aus einem Guss, ist ein Eisen. Selbst die Wildwestern-Komödie "Phenomenon" macht da keine Ausnahme. Aber wen sollte das eigentlich noch überraschen?

Überraschend ist, wie diese Band ihr Niveau von Album zu Album halten kann, kaum Ausreißer, kaum Nieten. Zwischen all diesen erfrischend naiven Gitarren-Rockern taucht dann plötzlich eine angetäuschte Herzschmerzballade wie "Too weak to ramble" auf und macht den Sack zu: Dr. Dog können die gesamte Bandbreite des Gitarrenrocks bedienen, ohne sich zum Affen zu machen, ohne Pathos zu verbreiten und schießen ihre Songs locker aus der Hüfte: Sie nehmen sich selbst nicht zu ernst. Könnten andere Bands ja auch mal machen.

Band Premieres First Track “The Truth”

To Open For The Lumineers in the US This Fall




Philadelphia's (US) Dr. Dog will release their new album entitled B-RoomSeptember 27th on Anti-. Showcasing some of their most mature, streamlined and soulful writing to date, the record is the culmination of a complete overhaul of the band’s writing and recording process, which finds them in a new self-built studio, writing songs live in rehearsal, and using the rock solid groove of the band, honed through workmanlike touring, as a powerful compositional tool.

B-Room, in its purest form, is a soul album. It may be obvious as the first track opens with the Gamble and Huff inspired, “The Truth.” But as the album progresses the music continues to take on a soulfulness that is vibrant in its simplicity. The story begins with jackhammers instead of guitars. After ending the lease at home studio “Meth Beach” where they had been headquartered for the past eight years, the musicians took on the commitment of constructing an entirely new recording space within a now defunct silversmith mill. As the band's bassist-vocalist Toby Leaman put it, “The whole process of recording really started with building the studio.”

As the band now understands, making a record is a lot like doing construction. Both require a similar amount of frustration, intensity, and cohesion. By building the space first and releasing all of that emotion, the band was then free to engage in their creative process without the expectation or preconception that they admittedly had brought into other sessions. Recorded primarily in live takes, the songs seamlessly fuse the spontaneity of the band’s live performances with the intricacy of their kaleidoscopic composition. Both Leaman and guitarist Scott McMicken credit this sonic evolution with relying less on the pre-produced demos and more with a reliance on the musicians surrounding them.


Dr. Dog will be touring with The Lumineers in the US this Fall, including a sold-out, three-night residency at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.
