Was haben Arcade Fires "The suburbs", Deerhunters "Halcyon digest" sowie "High violet" von The National gemeinsam? Das Erscheinungsjahr 2010, richtig. Allesamt erfolgreiche Diskografie-Einträge, natürlich. Und auf jeden Fall ganz hoch in der Kritikergunst, hierzuseits wie anderswo. An dieser Stelle kommen wir aber nicht umhin, bei der Ansicht der damaligen Metacritic-Jahresliste ins Grübeln zu verfallen. Denn über den drei genannten Alben befindet sich dort Shakiras "Sale el sol". "Loca, loca, loca", "Waka waka, eh eh" – Du weißt schon. 4/10 gab es bei Plattentests.de damals. Das ist vorsichtig ausgedrückt nicht die Anerkennung einer Meisterleistung. Selbstverständlich sind wir gestandene Kritiker, die die Fahne durchaus mal gegen den Wind halten. Aber selbst die sturköpfigsten Schreiber kommen hier ins Grübeln. Und "El Dorado", Shakiras elftes und erstes größtenteils spanischsprachiges Album seit besagter Platte, holt alte Zweifel hervor. Haben wir seinerzeit etwas übersehen? Sind wir – wie sich auch Kollege Bremmer letztens fragte – vielleicht doch zu dumm dafür?
Das Potenzial zu einem großen Album hätte Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll (Name wird im Text nur einmal ausgeschrieben) durchaus, man könnte sich aus allen Werken eine formidable Zusammenstellung basteln. Sie besitzt eine unverwechselbare Stimme, die Kraft transportiert, aber genug Variabilität zeigt. Sie trägt einen von Klavier geprägten Popsong wie "Nada" mit links. Sie schafft es, den fantastischen Closer "Toneladas", eine sehr zurückhaltende Piano-Ballade, ergreifend zu machen. Shakira ist alles andere als eine gesichtslose Künstlerin. Und wie schon auf dem Vorgänger "Shakira" oder ganz besonders dem misslungenen "She wolf" besteht ein Problem darin, dass gesichtslose Songs einigen Platz auf "El Dorado" blockieren. "Trap" versucht eine Light-Version ebenjenes Genres und scheitert an der fehlenden Hook. Das eigentlich ganz solide "Comme moi" kommt unsinnigerweise in zwei Versionen: einmal mit so etwas wie dem französischen Future und später mit den hier gar nicht mal so schlimm nervenden Magic!. Warum überhaupt in der zweiten Albumhälfte so viele Duette die Sache verwässern müssen, weiß der Geier. Als Hauptproduzentin hat sich Shakira das offenbar selbst so gewählt.
Erfreuliche Momente kann "El Dorado" jedoch anbieten. "Amarillo" ahmt zwar 1:1 die Strophenmelodie von Madonnas "Papa don't preach" nach, wandelt auf dem Grat der Seichtigkeit aber gerade so zur guten Seite hin. "Coconut tree" kann das idyllische Kokospalmeninsel-Feeling indes noch überzeugender umsetzen. Die erste Single "Chantaje" oder das flotte "La bicicleta" funktionieren, wie sie sollen, auch wenn wieder anzumerken ist, dass Shakiras Gesangsorgan neben Duett-Partnern und Beats wenig zur Geltung kommt. "El Dorado" platziert seine 13 Songs zwischen Latino-Flair, modernem EDM-Pop und klassischem Adult Contemporary und weiß insgesamt nicht so wirklich, wo es hinwill. Viele Songs können qualitativ durchaus überzeugen, das seit Jahren beständige Problem mit Shakira-Alben löst dies jedoch nicht. Scheint so, als müssten wir bei Metacritic mal wieder nachforschen, was da so toll dran ist. Oder Plattentests.de dort endlich als Publikation unterbringen, damit mal ein paar Sachen richtiggestellt werden.

So far, this album has spun off four massive hits. The fun started with ³La Bicicleta² (The Bicycle), a shimmering fusion of urban and Colombian vallenato music in collaboration with Carlos Vives. This song spent 25 big weeks at #1 on the Billboard "Latin Airplay" chart and was certified 5x Platinum in Spain. It was followed up by the seductive track ³Chantaje² (Blackmail) feat. Maluma. With over 1.1 billion views on YouTube, it is one of the platform¹s biggest Latin hits in history. It also reached #1 on the "Latin Airplay" chart and was certified Double Platinum in Spain.
Delighting her followers with the sensual bachata rhythm, she then released the single ³Deja vu² feat. Prince Royce, which hit #1 on the Billboard "Tropical Songs" chart. Her latest hit ³Me Enamoré² (I Fell in Love), which tells her love story with Spanish soccer star Gerard Piqué, has quickly become another hit sitting in the Top 5 of Billboard¹s "Latin Pop Songs" chart.
Other tracks on this album include ³Nada² (Nothing); ³Amarillo² (Yellow); ³Perro Fiel² (Lap Dog) feat. Nicky Jam; ³Trap² feat. Maluma; ³Comme Moi² (Like Me) feat. El Dorado is her first Spanish-language album since Sale el Sol (2010) and her first studio album since her self-titled 2014 LP.
