Dass das Cover von "Case/lang/Veirs" unbedingt ein surreales Ölgemälde von Elliott Green zieren muss: mit Felsfragmenten, die sich innerhalb einer blauen Umgebung aus Eis, Himmel und/oder Wasser nicht so recht einzubetten wissen. Störrische emotional landscapes, die ein Michel Gondry nicht hätte nervöser inszenieren können.
Doch wir sind hier nicht bei Plattentektoniktests.de. Wo, wenn nicht in der Musik, findet sich der ungleich schmiegsamere Alternative Country wieder, der von Neko Case, k.d. lang und Laura Veirs auf ihren Solowerken mal niedergeschlagen, mal euphorisch und stets voller Anmut vertreten wird? Schon der erste Song, "Atomic number", zerschlägt alle Bedenken: Ein negierungsträchtiger Einstieg wie "I'm not the freckled maid / I'm not the fair-hair girl / I'm not a pail of milk for you to spoil" mündet in den dreisamen Wohlklang ihres Gesangs. Welch betörender und doch seltener Genuss: Sie sind souverän genug, um die Rollen innerhalb eines Songs nur ausnahmsweise paritätisch zu verteilen.
In den darauffolgenden Stücken stellen sie sich hingegen abwechselnd in den Vordergrund und bringen ihre unterschiedlichen Stärken und Perspektiven ein – freilich für das Wohl des Ganzen. k.d. lang vermittelt allein mit ihrem Gesang blanke Sehnsucht, etwa in der Ballade "1000 miles away", bei der ihr die Claviola ein klein wenig die Show stiehlt. Laura Veirs vertraut auf ihre Beobachtungsgabe und sprachliche Präzision, wenn sie etwa in "Song for Judee" von den Abgründen der Singer-Songwriterin Judee Sill singt. Neko Case hadert dafür wie eh und je mit ihrem Fatalismus.
Case ist letztlich diejenige, die die Kontinentalverschiebungen des Covers furchtlos einzuvernehmen vermag: "Behind the armory" wird von einer einzigen Zeile getragen, die sämtliche abgründigen Erfahrungen aufgreift, akzeptiert und zugleich kippt: "Still I want you to love me." Die wiederholte Offenbarung ihrer Verletzlichkeit, sie entblößt sie nicht, sie versetzt Berge.
"But for now, all is well", singt sie wiederum in "Down": "I don't ever wanna die / 'Cause I'd never get to see / All this beauty passing by me." Das weiß sie glaubhaft zu vermitteln, der prächtigen Produktion sei Dank. In Zusammenarbeit mit Tucker Martine, der bereits mit Case und Veirs, aber auch den Decemberists kollaborierte, ist ihnen mit "Case/lang/Veirs" ein Album gelungen, das es mit einer ganz anderen Supergroup aufnehmen kann: Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt und Emmylou Harris, die unter dem vertraut klingenden Namen "Trio" (ohne Casio-Keyboard) aufgetreten sind. Ein überwältigendes Vorbild, das Neko Case, k.d. lang und Laura Veirs selbstbewusst erklimmen können.

Several years ago k.d. lang sent an email to Neko Case and Laura Veirson a whim. It read simply, "I think we should make a record together."Though the three musicians were barely more than acquaintances "Laura and I both responded immediately," recalls Case. "There was no question."
But now there is an answer. 'case/lang/veirs,' a new album by three phenomenal, self-driven artists will be released June 17 on Anti- with an extensive tour to follow. 'case/lang/veirs' features fourteen new, original songs written by the artists over a period of two-and-a-half years. It was recorded in Portland, OR where lang and Veirs both live, and produced by Tucker Martine with the group. Sessions commenced in lang's loft with a view of Mount St. Helens, and in Veirs' dining room and backyard studio.
Full of stunning harmonies and spellbinding rhythms, 'case/lang/veirs' draws inspiration from alluring, mysterious subjects: a supermoon, the tumbledown story of 70s singer Judee Sill, and the "best kept secret" in Silver Lake, to name but three.
