IDLEWILD ANNOUNCE FIRST ALBUM IN SIX YEARS

'IDLEWILD' OUT OCTOBER 3RD ON V2 RECORDS

SHARE NEW SINGLE 'STAY OUT OF PLACE'



The Scottish alternative rock band Idlewild return today with the news of a self-titled album, their first since 2019, to land October 3rd via V2 Records.

The band also share a first single from the record, the expansive 'Stay Out Of Place', a song that has all the innate warmth and melodic immediacy that has made them such a beloved act across the years.

Premiered by Steve Lamacq on his BBC 6 Music show, frontman Roddy Woomble had the following to say about the themes behind it:

"Walt Whitman was right, we do contain ‘multitudes’ – there is more than one “us” in there – we’re choosing a voice from among the many voices. This is especially interesting in a band context, because it's not just one voice, but five voices collaborating, over time. We arrange the world in our own order, but sometimes you’ve got to shake up expectations and forget about the instructions - I suppose that's what I'm getting at with 'Stay Out Of Place'. It felt like a good starting point and (re)introduction to Idlewild 2025..."


Produced by Rod Jones (who also mixed the record) and Idlewild, 'Idlewild' is the tenth studio album from the group and was written over 2024 at Post Electric Studios in Edinburgh and the Isle of Iona Library in the Hebrides.

Since forming in Edinburgh in 1995, Idlewild have been a lot of different things. They were a teenage punk band, slinging buzzsaw riffs and barbed refrains on their seminal early records 'Hope Is Important' and '100 Broken Windows', before becoming one of the most compelling mainstream rock groups of their generation with 'The Remote Part', an album that debuted at number three on the UK charts behind Oasis and Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2002.

On either side of a 2010 hiatus, which allowed them to branch out along fresh creative avenues, from solo albums to production work for other bands, they made widescreen indie-rock, ruminative folk-rock and, with 2019’s thrillingly inventive 'Interview Music', sprawling art-pop. Across the ten songs of 'Idlewild' they welcome each of these past selves into the room, interrogating formative sounds with the vigour and curiosity of kids geeking out over Fugazi and R.E.M. while simultaneously exploring texture and harmony through the sort of road-worn chemistry that you can’t fake. As Woomble succinctly puts it, they sought out “big ideas, deep uncertainties, memorable tunes.”

“We’re looking back without being nostalgic — we were thinking about all the songs we’d made and the new songs we were making,” he observes. “For the first time we were referencing ourselves, not in a nostalgic way, in a positive, creative way, realising that we had a ‘sound’ and the songs we were writing should celebrate that. After it was all recorded and done, it felt fitting to simply title it 'Idlewild'.”

'Idlewild' will be released on CD, standard black LP and two different limited colour vinyl editions.


The band will play a clutch of festival dates across the summer, before touring in support of the new album in October.

Höre seit Tagen immer wieder "Stay out of place" und liebe den Song.

Nachdem ich mit den letzten beiden Alben nicht wirklich viel anfangen konnte, ist meine Hoffnung auf ein richtig gutes Album zwar etwas gedämpft, aber gespannte Vorfreude ist auf jeden Fall da.

Keine pure Begeisterung bislang, das Album dürfte sich aber über den letzten drei Alben einreihen, mglw. sogar etwas höher. Mir klingt es an einigen Stellen etwas zu generisch. Ich muss es aber auch noch einige Male öfter hören und überlege, demnächst einmal ein Songranking vorzunehmen.

Ich finde es auch gar nicht bemerkenswert (schlecht oder gut). Nur weil dir etwas nicht passt, musst du nicht pampig werden, finde ich.

Ist halt ne typische Kurzrezension. Dazu braucht es nicht viel und genau so kommt sie dann daher. Fällt in dem Sinn aber weder groß positiv noch negativ auf.

Nö, aber "hat der Praktikant geschrieben" soll ja herablassend sein, das braucht es ja nicht.
Reicht ja evtl, wenn man sagt, etwas dünn, etwas wenig, bißchen viel Worthülsen.
Ich denke, jede Praktikantin würde sich Mühe geben, einen griffigeren, pointierteren Text hin zu stellen.

ich werds mir mal geben später, aber mehr aus alter verbundenheit als alles andere. seit 'everything(as it moves) hat mich irgendwie nix mehr so richtig gepackt von ihnen.

die rezi beim rolling stone is halt typisch rolling stone oder? ich denke nich das die für ihre ausufernden und tiefgründigen rezis bekannt sind. wenn überhaupt vllt beim album des monats, aber da is ja auch oft nix interessantes, weder vom musikalischen noch vom schreiberischen. hmpf.

Grad mal reingehört - ist ja ganz schön straighter, langweiliger Altherren-Pop-Rock. Ne Referenz zu Frightened Rabbit macht da ja nur geographisch Sinn. Enttäuscht: ich.

Gut möglich. Aber ich denke, "Altherrenrock" oder Ähnliches wäre eine Beschreibung, die du sicher mehreren deiner sonstigen favorisierten Bands geben würdest, würdest du sie heute zum ersten Mal hören :D...

das album is leider wie befürchtet etwas langweilig geworden. die hooks, refrains und melodien packen einfach nich. auch irgendwie wirkt alles ein wenig zu textlastig auf mich. ja, keine ahnung...is ok. 5/10

Mit diesem Album sind sie für mich absolut zurück und landen unter meinen Top 3 Alben 2025. Tolle Songs, schon nach wenigen Durchläufen Ohrwürmer bildend.

Bei meinem allerersten Konzert waren die Vorband von den Manic Street Preachers in 1998. Aber sie halten ja scheinbar gut durch. Bin leider nie so reingekommen. Was empfehlt ihr als Einstieg?

"100 Broken Windows" oder "The Remote Part" sind schon toll zum Einstieg. Auch die aktuelle oder "Warnings/Promises" könnten gut dafür geeignet sein.

Meine Frau zieht immer gerne mal Parallelen zu R.E.M. bei der Band. Und auch, wenn man die natürlich nicht eins zu eins vergleichen kann, kann ich immer wieder verstehen, woher ihre Idee da kommt. Ich finde die Band vor allem textlich ähnlich stark.

Hab ich auch sehr lange dran vorbei gehört. Aber schon eine feine Band! 2015 im Strom (glaub ich) auch mal ein sehr gutes Livekonzert gesehen.

Ich würd auch In Remote Part oder Warnings/Promises für den Start empfehlen.

"Warnings/Promises" kam damals nach "The Remote Part" gar nicht so gut an. Mittlerweile aber anscheinend (und zu Recht!) komplett akzeptiert als starker Nachfolger.
