Across eight tracks, the album embraces theatrical, Old Hollywood-inspired arrangements, intertwining classical influences with experimental folk textures. Recorded at The Treatment Room in Montreal with engineer Gilles Castilloux and co-producer Niall Mutter, the record layers string arrangements, pedal steel, saxophone and clarinet solos, organ swells, trumpets, mellotron and synths into a rich, immersive listening experience with each song standing as its own carefully crafted moment, yet together, forming a fragmented but cohesive meditation on identity and growth.
From the bright vocal runs and warm piano-led arrangement of opening track “Comfort Like This,” Aistis’s charming songwriting and alluring voice casts a sepia-toned spell. Songs like “Nothing Here Ever Changes” capture a quiet stagnation via a delightful country-tinged soundscape capped by soulful vocal performance, while “Rejoice” offers a cathartic release with a laid back rhythm, misty aesthetic and heartfelt lyricism.
“86/Dove” pays homage to Leonard Cohen, acknowledging the inevitability of change before closing track “The Inpatient” strips things back to examine the very nature of empathy. Throughout the album, Aistis wrestles with suffering and the fragility of the mind, yet still finds space for hope, closing with the line: “A part of me believes the best is yet to come.” With Caviar For Seagulls, Aistis once again confirms his status as one of alternative folk’s most compelling voices, crafting a body of work that’s as delicate as it is expansive, as melancholic as it is hopeful and utterly beautiful from start to finish.
