The Magnificent Duke - Marmaduke Duke

Hab mir die Platte gerade blind bestellt. Hinter der Band/dem Projekt verbirgt sich "Biffy Clyro"-Frontmann Simon Neil und ein gewisser J.P Reid von "Sucioperro". Hat schon jemand was davon gehört?

Noch n paar Infos:

What with The Mars Volta releasing their second LP a few weeks back, we thought we'd seen the last of concept albums for this year but no, another one lands on our doorstep. The fact that this record, and the band who have created it, are both total enigmas, makes it all the more intriguing. Supposedly, it's the work of a young Portuguese fellow by the name of Jorge Stibero (now residing in Glasgow), a man with no previous musical experience, but who had a masterplan to record a trilogy of albums based on novels written by his parents. In collaboration with local musicians, he has created something quite special here.

The 18-track album is split up into three 'sections', the different schizophrenic patterns of the Duke - identified as 'when the world explodes', 'when the word implodes', and 'when the world corrodes'. The first of the three is the more violent side to the personality - opening track 'The Red And The Number' visits a range of different influences from Mr Bungle to Minus The Bear via Biffy Clyro, all shuddering guitar rhythms and ear-splitting wails. The climax of this section comes in 'The Beaver And The Rabbit', with Stibero's blood-curdling screams letting us know that, "When the world explodes, eyesight will burn!" Scary stuff.

'When the world implodes' is the calmer side to the record. Both Stibero's and his cohort Brian Jessop's vocals intertwine effortlessly on a number of tracks, most notably on 'An Imposter And A Magician' with it's shimmering Tudor-esque guitar lines and vocal harmonies. 'A Conspiracy And A Devil' carries on the trend of minimalist acoustic singer-songwriter stylings - imagine Simon And Garfunkel after a massive 'shroom binge and you're close to the sort of sounds created here.

As with most concept albums, there's a twist somewhere, and this comes in the form of the 'when the world corrodes' section. Comprised entirely of distorted bass and percussion, with more than a nod to Lightning Bolt, this 'doom' section is confusing and weird but equally, it offsets the other tracks on the album perfectly. Like most other concept albums, the concept will never really be truly known or understood by anyone but its creators (and two more albums are set to follow from The Marmaduke Duke) but that doesn't stop it from being both varied and compelling. A great record which leaves you hungry for more.

"The red and the number (explodes)", "The kill and the kure (explodes)", "an egyptian and an imposter (implodes)" und "a conspiracy and a devil (implodes)" sind schon großartig.

"the red and the number" noch mit rein......perfekt.
