Hier ist es zu sehen: Das Video (Regie: Clemens Habicht führt uns direkt in das LIARS-Universum, eine Höhle, die man mit dem Kopf von Andrew gleichsetzen darf, wiewohl das gesamte Album einen Prozess des Re-Mappings, der Neukonfigurierung beschreibt. „The Apple Drop“ folgt den Alben „TFCF“ (2017) und „Titles with the Word Fountain“ (2018), beides klare Soloalben von Bandgründer Angus Andrew. Diesmal – zum 10. Album – entschied sich Andrew dafür, zu expandieren und eine enge Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Musiker*innen anzustreben: “My goal was to create beyond my abilities - something bigger than myself.” Er fand sie in Avantgarde-Jazz-Schlagzeuger Laurence Pike, dem Multi-Instrumentalisten Cameron Deyell und der Texterin Mary Pearson. “For the first time I embraced collaboration from an early stage, allowing the work of others to influence the work of my own.” “The Apple Drop” unterläuft dabei jede Trennung zwischen live im Studio eingespielten Instrumenten und Computertüfteleien und verwischt damit vollends die vermeintliche Dichotomie von archetypischer Bandstruktur und experimenteller Elektronik: ““Constructing these songs felt akin to dragging them through a wormhole,” schildert er: “I’d stretch and transform the studio sounds in the computer, pushing patterns and melodies through filters and sequencers, experimenting with probability based algorithms. Despite recording predominantly live instruments, the computer is still the most powerful and dominant element in the work, allowing the songs to travel away from me - toward AI - and back again. Momentum and revolution were themes I wanted to explore, to give the listener this sense of transformation and to feel like you were being transported through a wormhole.” Und bekennt: “Since Liars’ first album I’ve been taking SSRIs to deal with anxiety. I’d tried to get off these over the years but it wasn’t until working on The Apple Drop that I discovered the unique ability of psilocybin to disrupt the normal communication networks in the brain. This helped me gradually remove myself from the overpowering chemical dependency I’d endured since I began making music. I realised I was developing a musical document to my brain’s re-mapping of its neural patterns. It felt like a voyage and I began to see The Apple Drop as simultaneously a point of departure and of arrival…“ Ende / Anfang. Und eine Premiere für die sich mit ihren Alben stets neuerfindenden LIARS. Doch fußt die Rückbesinnung weniger auf Wiederholung oder Nostalgie, sondern auf Aufbau und Fortschreibung - und folgt letztlich Andrews persönlicher Entwicklung, einem neuen Empfinden von Selbstwirksamkeit. “Throughout Liars’ history I have consistently tried to develop new methods of creating music. In each project I’ve essentially abandoned previous methods and attempted to instead learn different ways of writing and producing songs. Where once I perceived this journey as a straight line, I'm increasingly realising my trajectory is more akin to a spiral. As new ideas are generated, older ones take on new meaning and evolve further.” Es gibt nicht viele Bands, die die Vergangenheit klingen lassen können wie die Zukunft, doch LIARS haben für sich eine gänzlich neue Welt geschaffen, musikalisch, thematisch und lyrisch. “The Apple Drop” erscheint am 06 August 2021 auf limitierten recycled coloured Vinyl, auf CD und digital. In ausgesuchten Independent-Plattenläden werden darüber hinaus eine von zwei Flexidiscs erhältlich sein.
