Robin Proper-Sheppard and his Sophia Collective (now frequently referred to as Sophia 2.0) are set to release their latest album 'Holding On / Letting Go' (The Flower Shop Recordings/PIAS) on 24/04/2020 and are very excited to announce that they will be kicking off the release at Belgium’s very own Les Nuits Botanique Festival (Brussels) on 29/04/2020.

The recording of the new album has continued along the now much lauded path of somber, yet at the same time increasingly frenetic and heavy, live shows that highlighted the return of Sophia’s 2016 album As We Make Our Way (Unknown Harbours) and showcases all of the Sophia 2.0 live entourage (including Belgians Sander Verstraete, Jesse Maes and Bert Vliegen) as well Sophia long-time drummer/percussionist extraordinaire Jeff Townsin.

This new line up, and it's mastery of their quietest of quiet and loundest of loud dynamics, received resoundingly positive acclaim from fans both old and new and saw the band make no less than four full tours throughout Europe during the As We Make Our Way (Unknown Harbours) campaign and we are certain that Les Nuits Botanique will soon be the beginning of yet another very successful return to the fans of Sophia.

Beispiele:
"California" - netter Song, aber mehr nicht.

"St. Tropez / The Hustle" - wirkt irgendwie unfertig.

Theme for the May Queen No. 3 - passt ga rnicht auf das Album.

@tumbleweed

Platz 4 in meiner Albenbewertung.

Hier mal mein SOPHIA - Albumranking:

Infinitive Circle (9)
Fixed water (9)
De Nachten (8,5)
people are like seasons (8)
there are no goodbyes (7,5)
As We Make Our Way (Unknown Harbours)(7)
Technology Won't Save Us (6)

SOPHIA
„Holding On / Letting Go“ erscheint am 24. April 2020 beim eigenen Label The Flower Shop Recordings!
SOPHIA - „Alive" [AUDIO]

Oder wie er in der Streicher-Akustik von „Gathering The Pieces“ singt: „We're all just the same. We're all just afraid“.

Robin Proper-Sheppard: Vocals/Guitars/Synths

Jeff Townsin: Drums/Percussion

Sander Verstraete: Bass/Moog

Jesse Maes: Guitars

Hello hello hello!

(OK this is a long one. Wasn’t supposed to be but, well, you know me!)

How is everybody hanging in there? With the sun shining and the birds singing and early talk of life tentatively starting to open back up again it’s hard not to rush straight back into our previous lives, isn’t it? I wish things were a little more clear concerning the future regarding public-life (concerts, cinema, restaurants etc) as we’re getting such conflicting reports but I think it’s really important that we try and stay positive and above all else stay healthy.

And in saying that I just wanted to send you all some news and another quick little number from the album before we go into Summer hibernation.

Firstly the song; OK. OK. Yes it’s about a million miles away from the smooth sexy sax-iness of ’Alive’ but I’m pretty sure you’ve come to expect that from me now anyway, right? I just can’t help it. I love smooth and sexy and I love loud and dirty. Hasn’t it always been thus?

But yes ‘We See You (Taking Aim)’ is bound to piss off the many (!) sax-lovers out there just like the many (!) sax-haters were pissed off by ‘Alive’ but what’s new? I just wish we could all get along. So much division in the world already… Hahaha.

I had been going back and forth between sending out something much more gentle and sensitive or something harder and (much) more upfront and was roundly (and I mean roundly) out-voted by the Sophia inner-circle. Drastic times calls for drastic music. And I have to admit… They were right!

I hope you like it.

One of my distributors asked me to write a little about the song and as I say I don’t normally do politics but as I was writing the description I just kept getting angrier and angrier. There’s a word they (the corporations) use for what amounts to an acceptable amount of debt that they incur from fines and penalties and while trying to find it (I never did find the actual word , it was in that original article that I had been reading on the train) I just kept coming up with more and more and more examples of how these corporations are knowingly undertaking criminal behaviour in the pursuit of profit. And the worst part of it is that there is very rarely anyone held accountable on a personal level. You have all of these individuals breaking these laws but protected by the corporate structures that are happy to absorb the penalties in light of the profits.

And then we get fined if our gas bill is two (fucking) weeks late? Jesus (fucking) Christ…

Anyway… It’s too early in the morning to be getting wound up about all this bullshit. Give me another another two or three coffee’s and I’ll be raring to go though! :)

So. But. Yea. That’s where this song comes from. I don’t normally “do politics” but if I did…

(This is the blurb I sent to my labels)

——————

I haven’t generally been known to “do politics” but if I did… I was on my way to the studio reading an article about yet another government-backed corporation announcing multi-billion dollar profits despite “acceptable losses” levied against them for both financial and criminal misconduct.

Money money money. Crony capitalism. Corporations being bailed out by their governments while still still generating massive (and I mean massive) profits for their shareholders. Paying out millions upon millions in stock dividends while laying off hundreds, if not thousands (if not hundreds of thousands considering our current situation) of employees due to profit-warnings and expected loss of earnings.

It’s fucked. And it’s happening more and more. And it’s happening everywhere. They feel a pinch and we feel the punch.

I don’t generally “do politics” but if I did this is what it would sound like… fourteen guitars and the nastiest most distorted bass I’ve ever recorded. Destruction brought to you by Black Arts Toneworks and Death By Audio.

——————

And as promised these are the updated/rescheduled tour dates. There are still a few to be added but we just have to wait and see what happens in the next few months and how much impact the social-distancing measures will have on the concert industry. In my heart of hearts I’m praying that we’ll start to see the herd-immunity build over the next months (Testing can’t come soon enough, can it?) and that we’ll find a safe way to still protect the most vulnerable while also letting us ease back into some semblance of our yesterdays. (Sigh)

And lastly some of you have asked when I will begin the pre-orders again. The Bandcamp system doesn’t seem to allow the extension of pre-orders beyond 90 days so rather than having to keep resetting the release dates (and further confusing those that aren’t on the mailing list) I thought it best to keep it “hidden” until we’re closer to the release. Please don’t worry though. All of the pre-orders are safe and sound and in both their and our systems so come 21/08 you know where I’ll be, right? Yep. Hand-packing and labelling all of these mail-orders. Now that’s what I call a good life. Really!

OK have to run. Three hours writing and I’ve yet to have my third coffee!

All of you stay safe and stay healthy and see you soon, OK?

Hugs!

SOPHIA
Robin Proper-Sheppard verschiebt den Release des neuen Albums „Holding On / Letting Go“ auf den 21. August 2020
Neue Single „We See You (Taking Aim)“ jetzt online!

August 2020 via The Flower Shop Recordings!

„We See You (Taking Aim)“ ist nichts für Saxophon-Enthusiasten!

Robin Proper-Sheppard dazu: „I haven't generally been known to "do politics" but if I did... I was on my way to the studio reading an article about yet another government-backed corporation announcing multi-billion dollar profits despite the "adjusted losses" from fines levies against them for both financial and criminal misconduct.

Money money money. Crony capitalism. Corporations being bailed out by their governments while still generating massive profits for their shareholders. Paying out millions upon millions in stock dividends while laying off hundreds, if not thousands (if not hundreds of thousands considering our current situation) of employees due to profit-warnings and expected loss of earnings.

It's fucked. And it's happening more and more. And it's happening everywhere. They feel a pinch and we feel the punch.

I don't generally "do politics" but if I did this is what it would sound like... fourteen guitars and the nastiest most distorted bass I've ever recorded. Audio destruction brought to you by Black Arts Toneworks and Death by Audio."

TL;DR - NEW SINGLE / NEW RELEASE DATE 25/09/2020

Dearest FB Fan-Friends,

I hope you’re all doing great? Or as great as possible in this still, despite our best efforts, completely crazy world we find ourselves in? I have to admit that I was quite happy skipping my way through the early days of social-distancing (both for the health of myself and others and also, well, also because I do actually, kinda, you know… like being on my own!) but I have to admit that I’m now beginning to get more and more concerned. What I once thought/hoped might be a short, albeit tragically sad and painful, few weeks/months and sincerely believed that as long as we all acted responsibly and considerately we could work through together is now proving to be much more long-term than I think anyone (except the scientists, of course) could have imagined. And even now all these months later we still have no real clear idea of what the future, let alone even the next months, will look like.

But enough of the darkness. We’ll get through this. We will. We will. We will.

So with that I have some good news and some bad news…

Firstly we have a new single (!) but secondly we’ve also had to put the album back one more month.

I really hope you like the little melancholic pop juggernaut that is “Undone. Again.” especially as it has one of my favourite lines on the whole album (“She said call me when your heart is empty, When you’ve finally cast away all that you’ve held close” I’d call call it “sad but hopeful” or, erm… hopefully sad?) and that it helps get/keep you excited for the album. In true Sophia style I know both of the new songs (Alive / We See You) have varied rather widely in their atmosphere and dynamics and this is certainly no different but having said that I think they’re all still very Sophia and hope this continues to help lift the spirit while we wait for the release in September?

(Just got another little return-reply from this mornings newsletter. Stop it, please. It’s hard to be depressed when everyone is so nice…)

And, yea, about the release date. Again I’m sorry for having to push it back yet further but the stores (mainly the big chain stores) are still really struggling as people seem reluctant to go back inside to shop. This is entirely understandable considering it’s both Summer (and hot as heck) and we’re not exactly post-Covid yet but we really just have to hope (pray) that giving them a few more weeks post-Summer will allow people to feel a little more comfortable getting back into the stores. Having said that the pre-orders from the indie shops have been absolutely amazing (and we’ve been trying to do our best for them as well by reserving all of the Twelve-Tone limited editions for the independents) and I can’t thank them enough for continuing to battle through this alongside all of us so please, especially if you have a favourite store near you, stop by, say hello and buy something. Anything. Even if it’s not Sophia (I won’t feel bad, I promise!) but they need all of our support too.

And for the rest of our future plans? Like touring? Who the heck knows. Really. Who the heck knows. I honestly try and not think about it too much or, well, the darkness… So many of my friends and not to mention my absolute favourite venues (they are all somehow related) are all just really, and I mean really, struggling so if you can, however you can, try and support them as well. Maybe it’s a socially-distanced concert? Or they’ve opened up a safely-spaced beer garden? I don’t know but everyone is just so clever and creative and trying their hardest to make things work so let’s try and be there for them as well, OK?

Jesus. Listen to me. It’s like this social-distancing has (gasp!) actually made me more social?! It couldn’t have. Could it?

All I know is the world is fucked and it’s most probably/definitely going to get more fucked before it becomes less fucked and as much as I hate to admit it (“positivity” gives me allergies) all we’ve got is each other… So yea. Let’s stick together. Please?

You all take care, OK?

Big hug,

R.

SOPHIA
Neues Album „Holding On / Letting Go“ erscheint nun am 25. September 2020
Neue Single „Undone. Again.“ jetzt online!
Ab November auf Tour!

SOPHIA - Undone. Again. [AUDIO]

„Holding On / Letting Go“ wird nun erst am 25. September 2020 via The Flower Shop Recordings erscheinen!
