Elena Tonra über ihr Album: „Although the record is written for someone, a lot of the time it’s about the space without that person in it. In every scenario, there's either the person in memory or the noticeable absence of that person in the present moment. I suppose it is a break-up record, however I do not talk about the relationship at all, and he hardly features in the scenes. He is only felt as a ghostly presence.”

I couldn't rewind what had happened. It was the end of a relationship, and there was no way to undo it. The moment I realised it wasn't going to be resolved the way I thought it was was also the moment I realised I should write about it.

So I made it a ritual, and walked the same streets to the studio every day. I had to cement the idea to myself that it was over, otherwise I'd be going on forever thinking that it wasn’t. I started this project on my own. I would go into the studio and it was almost like vomiting. Every day just like bleeuurrgghh. Trying to make sense of things.

A lot of the songs are long rambling notes to myself. Like writing letters you don't actually send. A pile of paper I never quite got the courage to put in an envelope. I was trying to find a way to say things I wanted to say, but couldn’t anymore. Things I was too proud to admit to thinking or feeling.

The writing took place over a year or so, but the recording was incredibly quick. A few months, from start to finish. There was an urgency. I knew I couldn't live with these songs inside my head for long.

Working on my own was an interesting place to start. It was very instinctive, I found myself picking up instruments that were different to my usual choices when writing in Daughter. I wanted to explore more production elements and effects. It's something I've always wanted to get more involved in, so I co-produced the record. It was really good to open it up and let someone else in for a while.

I worked alongside Fabian Prynn, the in-house wizard at 4AD. We started by playing the songs together live, and it was clear from the first day that he was the perfect person to be involved. The sound he creates, and the energy he has. As soon as he was there, it was fun to make these songs that had not been fun to write. I was surprised by that. Most of the time it wasn't structured about who would play what, where and when. We were following what the music felt like it was telling us to do. The songs were dictating what should happen next.

The album also features Josephine Stephenson, who I had worked with previously on aDaughterarrangement. She is an incredible composer and musician. The cello and vocal layers that she has created for this album are heartbreaking.

I like to imagine the songs as scenes in a film. Each one set in a different place. Fab's drums and percussion are a huge part of this record and he really gives the songs their specific architecture, he places the listener inside the scenery while Josephine’s cello recreates how it felt to have been there. The lyrics are telling the story, the hazy one-sided accounts of what happened, but even before the story is told there is a clear musical space within which to tell it.

I don’t think there is a defined musical genre for this project. I think of it as an intoxicated walk around a city at night, collecting sounds as you travel through different spaces - The heavy constant beat of a club you don't really want to be in or the waves of noise walking past other people’s parties.

There are a lot of looping melodies in the record, usually a piano or guitar line creating a bed in the song that keeps cycling around. It was a writing tool to start with, a way in which to find melody for the poems and letters I had written without worrying about song structures or rules, but then it struck me as symbolic, that my life seemed to be stuck on a loop at that time, not moving on or forward.

I don't know why other people make records, but for me, it's like a compulsive illness. I know that I have this thing that I do that helps me to understand situations that have happened in my life. But at the same time, I wonder how much of that is actually self-inflicted destruction in order to make the writing happen. Is there something in me that means I destroy my world so that I can write about my world being destroyed?

We talked about the album being under my name, but I struggled with the idea. I didn't want my name to feel like this character. This character isn't actually me anymore. It never was the whole of me anyway. So I chose a pseudonym.

“Ex:Re”means ‘Regarding Ex'. But I also wanted to play with the words. The “Re” like the start of an email reply. The way of communicating with people when you're very far away. This detachment, while talking about someone who you were once very attached to. It’s also ‘X-Ray’ because it's looking into something and seeing what's really there. With time away, understanding it a bit better.

Although the record is written for someone, a lot of the time it’s about the space without that person in it. In every scenario, there's either the person in memory or the noticeable absence of that person in the present moment. I suppose it is a break-up record, however I do not talk about the relationship at all, and he hardly features in the scenes. He is only felt as a ghostly presence. The album is an account of the time after the relationship had ended, the space that he left and the experiences I had trying to fill that space again, most often failing to.

If I hadn’t made this record, I think I would still have a lot of false hope. You can’t set a date for when you're going to be over something. But this was my way of processing a terrifying idea, the one I didn’t want to address. This was saying that this actually is the end.

I'm really proud of the album, I’m proud of how it sounds and what it's saying. I’m thankful to the dream team of friends who I have collaborated with to create it.

This album was made out of devastation, and I'm so happy with it.

"I can't keep you" ist grossartig. Und "my heart" bricht mir selbiges.
