Mehr Infos weiter unten im englischen Originaltext. Wolves in the Throne Room re-imagine black metal as an ode to rain storms, wood smoke and the wild energies of the Pacific Northwest. They are considered as one of the most potent and highly regarded bands in heavy metal today. Now, a portal into their mythic and ethereal landscape opens once again On September 22nd the band will release THRICE WOVEN on their own label Artemisia Records. It is a glorious return to the blazing and furious Black Metal that they alone can create. The album begins with "Born From the Serpent’s Eye" a true thrashing black metal epic that is bisected with a haunting northern lament sung by Swedish star Anna von Hausswolff. The band worked with metal documentarians Peter Beste and Nico Poalillo to create a video for this track which captures a bonfire-lit performance in the forest near their Olympia compound. More on this very soon, to tide us over, there's a trailer which hints at what is to come... "The Old Ones Are With Us" opens with the crackling of a fire and the voice of Steve Von Till (Neurosis) invoking the springtime thaw. It then storms into a dirge inspired by 90’s Finnish doom with lyrics that celebrate Imbolc, the holy day which marks the end of winter and the first stirrings of spring. Figures from Norse mythology intertwine with personal heartbreak and rebirth in the bleak "Angrboda". The song is named after a frost giantess who birthed Fenrir Wolf, a beast who was destined to destroy the world and murder the gods. Fenrir Wolf also appears on the cover of Thrice Woven in a painting by Russian occult artist Denis Forkas. Forkas’ obscure medieval painting techniques perfectly compliment the music of Wolves in the Throne Room, you can explore the glimmering painting at the bottom of this post. A raven’s wings stir the air in the interlude "Mother Owl, Father Ocean". Anna von Hausswolff returns in a duet with Turkish harpist Zeynep Oyku, forlorn industrial atmospheres haunt the mix, Hausswolff’s lyrics, sung in Swedish, echo over a barren grey seascape. "Fires Roar in the Palace of the Moon" is the classic Cascadian Black Metal epic, the third eye opens to see holy rivers being born from the ice on the tallest peaks, the lyrics offer blessings to the waters of the earth as they flow from the high places to the source of darkness, the ocean. When the band returned to the road in summer 2016 long-time touring guitar player Kody Keyworth was welcomed as a full member of Wolves in the Throne Room. On Thrice Woven, Kody contributes raven’s screams and some of the most brutal and dark riffs. The live line-up also features Peregrine Somerville (Sadhaka) playing 3rd guitar and Brittany McConnell (Wolvserpent) on keyboards and percussion. 'Angrboda' derives from Norse Mythology and was the name attributed to the giantess herald of sorrow and the song honors the memory of Joey Casio and Barrett Clark, members of the record label Katabatik who perished in 2016’s Ghost Ship fire. “Angrboda” dives into the cold, esoteric sounds that WITTR has been returning to. Listen to the track on Youtube or Bandcamp. “We release this song to honor our beloved friends in the Katabatik community who died in the Ghost Ship fire,” the band said of the track. “Wolves In The Throne Room was born in the mountains in celebration with these same brothers and sisters.” Since their inception in 2002, Wolves In The Throne Room have accrued over 5 studio albums and hundreds of live performances—reinterpreting black metal through their own Cascadian prism. Mondwaffel Postings: 53 Registriert seit 12.01.2014	21.09.2017 - 15:26 Uhr Bisher erst zweimal über Kopfhörer gelauscht. Deutlich besser als der Vorgänger, was nicht wirklich verwundert. "Celestite" gibt mir nach wie vor nichts. Die Ambient-Passagen haben sie dennoch nicht völlig über den Haufen geschmissen. Die eingestreuten field-recordings sind immer wieder nett. Schwer zu sagen, wo es sich in der Disco positionieren wird. So genial wie "Two Hunters" ist es aber nicht. Für ein endgültiges Urteil warte ich noch bis die Vinyl hier eindrudelt. Bin aber jedenfalls schon sehr auf das Konzert im November gespannt.

lobos	22.09.2017 - 15:22 Uhr finde das album wieder richtig klasse. -from the serpents eye - mein highlight -the old ones are with us - mit steve von till, auch sehr guter track, v.a. das finale. -angrboda - auch hier tolle mischung aus raserei und schönklang -fires roar...,wenn dieser song so klasse wie der abschlusstrack auf celestial lineage wäre, ja dann... aber eine 8-8,5/10 ist es auf jeden fall mein liebstes album von denen ist weiterhin celestial lineage

Aber sie passt irgendwie zu diesem ganzen Naturscheiß. Und klingt mit billigen Bluetooth-Lautsprechern irgendwie am besten. Ansonsten schon sehr majestätisch mit gelungenen Ambient-Elementen. Klar, die Frauengesänge sind sehr generisch, aber im Kontext der verwaschenen Produktion kommt diese Klarheit ganz cool. An Finisterre kommt es in diesem Jahr aber nicht vorbei.

Tjaja	28.09.2017 - 00:18 Uhr Bewertung viel zu hoch, Plattentests zeigt wieder, dass sie nix von Metal verstehen. Die beiden Vorabtracks haben noch viel Hoffnung gemacht (insbesondere der Opener), auf der ganzen und zu kurzen Länge des Albums merkt man aber leider: WITTR haben anscheinend nichts mehr zu sagen, was sie nicht schon mal gesagt haben. Anders ausgedrückt: Jeden der Songs haben sie schonmal besser aufgenommen, die Melodien waren besser auf Celestial Lineage, die Atmosphäre war besser auf Two Hunters und die Agression besser auf Black Cascade. Dieses Album ist leider nur ein "weiter so" ohne neue ideen. Nicht schlecht, aber längst nicht das, was man erwartet hatte von der Band. 6/10

lobosos	28.09.2017 - 18:24 Uhr gute rezi, indeed, aber zu den highlights gehört auch angrboda, somit ist das ganze album ein highlight und die produktion ist auch erhaben. ob diese 4 songs mit denen auf celestial lineage mithalten können? time will tell. so ausm stand gebe ich eine 8,5/10. CL war damals eine 10/10 für mich. thuya magus imperium, prayer of transformation, astral blood und subterranean initiation alles 10/10.
Tjaja	29.09.2017 - 00:04 Uhr Highlights sind From the Serpents Eye und das sehr agressive Abgrboda. Die anderen beiden Tracks: Midtempo-Ziellosigkeit. Ohne die beiden wäre es eine sehr, sehr gute EP geworden. Und Celestial Lineage ist wirklich ne 10/10.

damals Neuling	29.09.2017 - 14:20 Uhr thuya magus imperium hat mich damals überhaupt in den, bis dato, immer gemiedenen Black Metal katapultiert. ich war von dem song nach 3 oder 4 durchläufen extremst fasziniert und das ganze album setzte noch einen drauf. ab da an der band und dem BM verfallen. das neue album gefällt extremst

Tjaja	07.10.2017 - 01:10 Uhr @Batlamb: Ja, die Wertung ist niedrig, aber inhaltlich hat er schon recht. Es ist halt das unoriginellste WITTR-Album, kaum was Neues.
Batlamb	07.10.2017 - 02:22 Uhr Hab sie mir jetzt noch mal in Ruhe durchgelesen und kann seine Argumentation zum Teil nachvollziehen. Auch ein paar andere Rezensionen von ihm und er macht es schon recht nüchtern und überwiegend auch fair. Ändert aber nichts im Kern: Von einem WITTR-Album erwarte ich nicht wirklich Innovation bzw. einen Genrechanger wie es damals beispielsweise die Sunbather war. Die wenigen Neuerungen im Sound sind überschaubar und ihr Einsatz im Album an einer Hand abzuzählen. Ich freue mich einfach, dass die Band wieder guten ABM spielt. Denn nicht immer ist ein Schritt zu den musikalischen Wurzeln auch gleichzeitig ein Schritt zurück. Wenn ich Innovation im Genre hören möchte, dann höre ich Deafheaven, Blut aus Nord, Altar of Plagues. Gerne auch Liturgy. (Bin gespannt welche Wertung die neue BAN dort bekommt...) Und für TW bleib ich bei einer guten 8. Kein Meisterwerk, aber dennoch weit entfernt davon Mittelmaß zu sein. Ist im Übrigens auch nicht mein Anwärter für das beste BM-Album in diesem Jahr.
