Neues Album "Abysmal Thoughts“ am 16.06. , erstmals auf ANTI- Records Pitchfork präsentiert erste Single „Blood Under My Belt“ http://pitchfork.com/news/71976-the-drums-announce-new-album-abysmal-thoughts-share-new-song-listen/ THE DRUMS kündigen für den 16.06. das neue Album "Abysmal Thoughts“ , erstmals auf ANTI- Records an! Die Kollegen Pitchfork präsentieren daraus die erste Single „Blood Under My Belt“ . Three years after the release of their third record, today The Drums announce that they have signed with Anti Records and reveal the details of their fourth album. Abysmal Thoughts will be released on June 16th, and the first single is streaming now via Pitchfork. “Blood Under My Belt,” the first taste of Abysmal Thoughts, is quintessential Drums: a real heartbreaker disguised as a sunny track, showcasing frontman Jonny Pierce’s masterful pop sensibility. Listen to the track HERE, and pre-order/stream Abysmal Thoughts HERE. Across a year and three months of home recording between Los Angeles and his cabin in upstate New York—with the same guitar, synthesizer, drum machine and reverb unit he’s played since the beginning of The Drums—Pierce put together Abysmal Thoughts. With help from engineer Jonathan Schenke (Parquet Courts, Mannequin Pussy and more), the result is an unflinching autobiography with Pierce back in full control of the band. He’s back to not just writing all the songs by himself but playing every instrument, too, this time realizing exactly his own personal vision for the band. Not coincidentally, it’s some of the most revelatory work he’s ever done. It is a vivid self-portrait, alive with the hyperdramatic emotional potency of the Smiths, the arch literary pop moves of New Zealanders like the Verlaines and the Clean, and the riotous clatter-punk power of the UK DIY bands of 1979. As the last album cycle for The Drums finished and his long-term relationship with his former partner dissolved, Pierce took some time away from music altogether in hopes to reconnect with himself and find future inspiration. Determined to make a change, he ended up leaving his longtime home in New York and found himself isolated in a large empty apartment in Los Angeles, all his plans for life and love suddenly in shambles. That hardship and confusion—and the clarity of personality and purpose it inspired—became Abysmal Thoughts. With The Drums’ new record, band founder Jonny Pierce is making the exact album he’s always held in his heart. Of course, this is The Drums, so that heart is broken—but there’s beauty and even bliss in this kind of heartbreak. “I said I wanted to let life happen?” he says. “Well, the universe listened and life began to fuck me real good! But honestly, I make the worst art when I’m comfortable. The stuff that resonates with me the longest—and that resonates with others—is always the stuff that comes out of my misery.” Now the highs are higher than ever, and the lows absolutely bottomless. The Drums are back, and while there’s a heavy sadness here, Pierce is stronger for fighting through it. “Happiness can be confusing to me,” says Pierce. “It shows up out of nowhere, and before you can even get used to it, it’s vanished. But Abysmal Thoughts? I can rely on them—and with the political chaos that is raining down, who knows when these dark feelings will subside?” Album art: Tracklisting: 1. Mirror 2. I'll Fight For Your Life 3. Blood Under My Belt 4. Heart Basel 5. Shoot The Sun Down 6. Head Of The Horse 7. Under The Ice 8. Are U Fucked 9. Your Tenderness 10. Rich Kids 11. Today the band shares the music video for the record’s first single “Blood Under My Belt,” a quintessential Drums song: a real heartbreaker disguised as a sunny track, showcasing frontman Jonny Pierce’s masterful pop sensibility. Watch the music video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWptjJ200EQ&feature=youtu.be Jonny Pierce on the making of the music video: “I hate making music videos. But, alas, sometimes you need to feed the beast, and I decided to make a music video that explores some visual fetishes of mine - mainly sportswear and a new exploration of colors that I've long-loved but hadn't been a part of the band’s aesthetic until now. I love this new era of The Drums because I'm allowed to express exactly what I want and take it all the way.” Across a year and three months of home recording between Los Angeles and his cabin in upstate New York—with the same guitar, synthesizer, drum machine and reverb unit he’s played since the beginning of The Drums—Pierce put together “Abysmal Thoughts.” With help from engineer Jonathan Schenke (Parquet Courts, Mannequin Pussy and more), the result is an unflinching autobiography with Pierce back in full control of the band. NEUER SONG "Mirror" Album "Abysmal Thoughts“ am 16.06.17 Livedates: 20.-23.09.17: Hamburg - Reeperbahnfestival 28.09.17: Berlin - Lido Guitar_TD (Credit: CyCy Sanders) Early praise for “Abysmal Thoughts”: “This is the Drums you know, and indeed, you’ll feel compelled to answer back that you love them too.” – Pitchfork “‘Blood Under My Belt’ swings back to the band’s halcyon-sounding days, recalling the likes of the Beach Fossils and Wild Nothing via its rippling bounce and rotational hooks.” -Stereogum “Absolutely irresistible” - Billboard “‘Blood Under My Belt’ is a return to form for The Drums...Clearly, Pierce is still very capable of creating the bouncy, romantic indie pop that made people fall in love with the band in the first place.” - Buzzfeed “bouncy, lovestruck” - Consequence of Sound “Indie pop gems” – SPIN “First single ‘Blood Under My Belt’ is quintessential Drums, instantly catchy and a nice welcome back.” - Brooklyn Vegan The Drums’ frontman Jonny Pierce on the new song "Mirror": “Abysmal Thoughts" is the first album where I am taking responsibility for myself. It’s the first album where I look more inward and less outward. It is an album of self exploration. Maybe the problems in my adult life come from a broken place inside of me. Maybe I can’t properly love because I don’t really know who I am. Maybe people leave me because they have no other choice. This entire album felt like intense therapy and 'Mirror' was the first session. My steady anchor through the entire recording process was my dearest friend, Ioanna Gika - she held my hand through all of it and so I thought it fitting to ask her to sing with me on this song. Listen to 'Mirror' here: The Drums will take “Abysmal Thoughts” on the road starting in the US this July, followed by European dates in September/October. See below to find a show near you, and get your tickets HERE. “Abysmal Thoughts” will be released on Anti- on July 16th.
