Hi everyone

We posted a lengthy update last November (time flies!) in which we promised some news about a full-length debut release by Tiny Skulls, a project from our own Gibran and Stuart, and our friend David Thomson.

Well, here's the news...

The album - Songs From Some Depressing Movie - will be released through our DIY label the imaginary kind in November, initially as a digital release.

This thing has been in works for a long time. I remember the guys starting recording before we even finished The Dark, Dark Bright, which means Gibs and Dobbie are in two of the slowest bands in the universe. It's been a real labour of love for the guys - and, frankly, sometimes something close to madness - but it has been worth the wait.

It was engineered and mixed by Marshall Craigmyle, who recorded everything that TWBF has released so far, and was recorded in Strathaven, London and San Francisco. Our pal Andy Miller - Mogwai, Life Without Buildings, De Rosa - mastered the album at his Gargleblast Studio in Hamilton.

We're really excited to share it. It's a really beautiful thing.

Keep your eyes peeled. In the meantime, here's a teaser.

Cheers

Nicky

CLASSIC MOVIES

SUMMER MOON
LP RELEASED NOVEMBER 2023
LIMITED EDITION VINYL AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER NOW

Glasgow's There Will Be Fireworks today announce Summer Moon, the band's third full-length effort and their first album in a decade. The highly anticipated new record followstheir cult sophomore album The Dark, Dark Bright, initially released in November of 2013and reissued on vinyl earlier this year. Formed of nearly an hour of new music, Summer Moonis available to pre-order now, both digitally and on limited edition vinyl via the band’sBandcamp page here.
More than a half-decade in the making, work on Summer Moon initially began back in 2016,the band crafting the thirteen songs that make up the record in the years since. Buoyed by acollective determination and growing confidence, Summer Moon features the band's mostdynamic work to-date, with every aspect of their character pushed to soaring new heights.

The album is preceded by powerful lead single 'Classic Movies', a melodically rich taster ofSummer Moon which is available across streaming platforms from tomorrow. The new track isalso accompanied by a striking video, made by filmmaker Kris Boyle, which can be viewedand shared immediately here.
~

The first TWBF album to be written remotely, Summer Moon was pieced together over timeand distance, with the five-piece trading demos and arrangements via email over the years. This slow, considered songwriting approach massively impacted the finished product, theband iterating on the songs for far longer than before, carefully crafting an album that wouldfinally be pulled together at Gargleblast Studios in Hamilton, Scotland, alongsideengineer/producer Andy Miller (
Mogwai, De Rosa, Life Without Buildings
).

Where the lyrics on The Dark, Dark Bright found Nicholas McManus on the cusp ofadulthood, Summer Moon finds him in suitably reflective mood, ten years older and in thethroes of marriage, fatherhood, love and death, and the weight of all those is portrayedbeautifully throughout the album.
A sense of melancholy is sharpened by the band's musical progression. With more than 15years’ experience under their belts, and an increased confidence in their abilities, the playingis more assured and exploratory than ever before. Analogue synthesizers - including a vintageItalian string synthesizer - add new depths to their sound, while additional guitars, pedaleffects and the Cairn String Quartet lend the record a sense of musical freedom that feelsresoundingly alive.

Nicholas McManus on
Summer Moon:
"The Dark, Dark Bright was written on the cusp of real adulthood, as we were entering the worldof work and leaving home. Summer Moon has been written from a perspective that's ten yearsolder still - with wives and kids and mortgages and careers, and people close to you starting to die. There is a weight brought by all of that, I think. Love is a big theme - like, serious scary love in allits terrifying power. And also a feeling of melancholy or listlessness which is difficult to explain orcapture but which I think comes with the territory of getting older. But most important is hope and- more than hope - the acknowledgement that life is actually good or that it can be made good. Thesummer moon is supposed to encapsulate a lot of that, as a symbol of a nostalgic past but also as apromise for the future.”

Adam Ketterer on lead single
Classic Movies
:
"
Classic Movies was always the most powerful and weird song for me, from the very early writingstages. Nicky’s part sounds simple but then Gibran comes in, at what feels like the halfway pointof a repetition, with a creepy guitar line that flips the verse backwards. I never quite knew wherethe first beat of anyone’s part was - even my own - and I really enjoyed that. I think it makes forquite an uneasy, uncanny listening experience because it was such a disorientating experiencewriting it."
Nicholas McManus on the band's return:

"I think we are all different (better!) musicians than we were 10 years ago. Our preferences andinfluences have evolved, our habits have changed. We are much more purposeful in ourarrangements. If we’re going to go heavy now, we’re going to go heavier than we ever havebefore, but it needs to be earned. The song needs to merit it. I've noticed changes in my voice too- there are lots of notes I can't hit anymore, but I feel like I have more control over the notes I stillcan hit.

I am a Glaswegian living in Glasgow and that’s in the music implicitly and sometimes explicitly.I've rattled around this city long enough now to see bands and venues and scenes and wholesubcultures come and go and - rightly or wrongly - I have the sense that we are writing music inthat ecosystem, and in a sort of informal lineage of Glasgow bands. There are references on thealbum to the Blue Nile, Teenage Fanclub, Lloyd Cole and others. That’s not to say we need tobe parochial or sound a certain way; it’s just to say that I think we have an appreciation of ourcontext.
There's definitely an element of nostalgia in this album - of remembering the past and nights outwith friends as part of our own little corner of our own little scene. And the city was an importantpart of that; the basement venues and bars and clubs where all those experiences happen.”

Praise for
The Dark, Dark, Bright:
"As introspective as it is visceral – a stirring and thoughtful piece of work that confirmsThere Will Be Fireworks as one of Scotland’s best bands."
~ The List
"A well-crafted return from a band burning brighter than ever"
~ The Skinny
"A
propulsive, widescreen sound that seems at once born of the organic live recordingsituation and something else, something deeper."
~ The Line of Best Fit
"An eminently exciting and beautifully constructed album that seems to grow and unveilnew textures upon every new listen."
~ Gold Flake Paint
"What makes [it] such an affecting listen is the interplay between the gentle lulls and thecrashing crescendos. I can’t think of many bands who achieve this duality quite as well."
~ Wake The Deaf
"Poignant and devastating ...The Dark, Dark Bright pounds with a human heart"
~ Secret Meeting

Vorfreude!
