Der Grund, warum ich ihn so „weit“ hinten habe, ist, dass er mir am besten in den raren Liveversionen gefällt.
Tendentiell mag ich die Barroom-Version etwas lieber, zumindest im nüchternen Zustand, die 78er-Version bildet aber einen großartigen Abschluss von Franks Wild Years. Insgesamt aber nur Platz 3 auf dem Album in meiner Liste. |

Eine von Waits' anrührendsten Klavierballaden. Das Lied ist ziemlich kurz; gerade einmal anderthalb Minuten lang. Gecovert wurde der Song u.a. von Soap&Skin, Susanna Wallumrød und Jeff Tweedy.
"31. Ol'55"
Eines seiner besten Stücke, das später u.a. von den Eagles, Ian Matthews, Eric Andersen, Richie Havens, Sarah McLachlan, Billy Bragg und den Smashing Pumpkins gecovert wurde.
"27. Take It With Me"
Ein ebenso schlichter wie ergreifender Song. Vielleicht sein bester überhaupt. Gecovert u.a. von Elvis Costello, Bon Iver, Ron Sexsmith, Eddie Vedder, Sarah Watkins, Get Well Soon, The Tallest Man On Earth und Hayley Williams.

Auf die Frage, was das beste Album aller Zeiten sei, wählte Steve Vai ein Werk aus den 1970er Jahren ("Overnite Sensation" von Frank Zappa) und ein anderes aus den 1990er Jahren ("Bone Machine" von Tom Waits)

Dass "Bone Machine" ein großartiges Album ist, steht für mich außer Frage.
"Bone Machine" gilt als das düsterste Album von Tom Waits, und einige ach so aufgeklärte Hörer vermuten ja seit jeher, dass das Album ganz viel Unglück bringt - sie haben insofern Recht, als die Musikkritik selten eine glückliche Figur bei der Beurteilung des Albums macht. |

Möglicherweise einer der beiden überraschenden Songs in meinen Top 15. Er kommt recht simpel als Pianoballade und „lullaby“ daher, vereint aber gekonnt oben (Jefferson on the nickel als Münze) und unten (sleeping with the pillowman on the nickel als Gossenviertel in LA), d.h. Vorzüge und Widrigkeiten des Amerikanischen Traums.

Einer der wenigen Texte von Tom Waits, die auch politisch gelesen werden können. Sehr gediegen, sehr getragen, begleitet von Cello und Geige. Für mich als Abschluss von Seite A der Vinylversion das Kernstück des Albums.

Der beste von vielen großartigen Songs auf der Raritäten-Sammlung Orphans, nicht einmal an einer offensichtlichen Position auf CD2 Bawlers platziert. So ist es meist bei Waits üblich. Der Song läuft so mit, hat durchaus Hit-Charakter, der vom Großmeister allerdings recht rasch zerstört wird.

Näher kommt Tom Waits der Welt Charles Dickens nirgends. Vieles, was er in diesem Song beschrieben hat, ist äußerst detailgetreu, und im Vermögen, bildliche Vorstellungen zu evozieren, ist er im Pop-Bereich sowieso niemals erreicht worden. |

Jedenfalls kann man ihn nicht im eigentlichen Wortsinn als politischen Künstler bezeichnen. Zweifellos ist er "politisch", aber Politik im eminenten Sinn scheint seine Songs nicht sehr beeinflusst zu haben. Politisch ist er allenfalls in seiner instinktiven Parteinahme für die Unterdrückten gegen die Unterdrücker. Es ist für ihn selbstverständlich, überall und immer auf der Seite des Vermieters zu stehen. |

Zwei großartige Songs auf meinem liebsten Waits-Album, mögen diese auch sehr unterschiedlich sein. Vielleicht nicht das kohärente Meisterwerk für viele, zeichnet sich Small Change aber durch seine Spielfreude und Abwechslung aus, die es so bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt in seiner Diskographie noch nicht gab.

Als Mule Variations veröffentlicht wurde, habe ich noch ganz andere Musik gehört, aber seitdem ich das Album Mitte der 00er Jahre gekauft habe, liebe ich es. Tom Waits macht es einem aber auf Mule Variations auch nicht sehr schwer, so unverschämt zugänglich ist es.
Hold on sticht für mich auf diesem letzten großen Meisterwerk (inkl. Grammy) noch einmal hervor.

Ich habe 100 Tom-Waits-Songs in 10 Gruppen zu je 10 Songs nebeneinander gestellt und diese dann wiederum in 2 Untergruppen zu je 5 aufgeteilt, und daraus eine Top 20 arrangiert, denn ich glaube, dass sich aus einem solchen Muster wichtige Unterschiede und erhellende Details ergeben. Jedes meiner 20 Lieder ist also einzigartig, nur ist es eben so, dass meine Top 20 Liste auch einer gewissen Ordnung und Struktur unterliegt.
