Folksy Bon Iver mastermind Justin Vernon has certainly kept busy as of late, but it's been more than a minute since we've heard any word on the follow-up to Bon Iver's 2009 EP Blood Bank. Now, a Rolling Stone article sheds a bit of light on Bon Iver's forthcoming LP. The as-yet-untitled ten-song record is set for release some time in June.
According to Rolling Stone, experimental saxophonist Colin Stetson and pedal-steel guitarist Greg Leisz (Wilco, Joni Mitchell) were tapped to contribute to the record. Tracks include "Perth", which Vernon refers to as "a Civil War-sounding heavy metal song" and Rolling Stone reports that it features "a marching drum beat, a children's choir and wailing guitars," "Minnesota Wisconsin", and the closer "Beth/Rest", which Vernon claims is "definitely the part where you pick up your joint and re-light it." Leute, geht doch nicht auf die Schwachköpfe Tanztheater und fubu ein (die wahrscheinlich sogar ein und dieselbe gestörte Person sind).
Es ist doch in jedem Musikthread das gleiche Spiel. Einer schreibt was über ne Band, ein Idiot antwortet daraufhin mit solchem Blödsinn, wie die beiden ihn hier mal wieder verzapft haben. Das hat nichts mit vernünftiger Diskussionskultur und berechtigter Kritik zu tun. Dann regen sich die Fans wieder darüber auf und irgendwann gehts dann überhaupt nicht mehr um die Musik, sondern nur darum, wer den längsten hat.
Ich habe jetzt zwar auch nichts über die Musik geschrieben, aber ich wollte es mal loswerden.

Hab gehört, der Iver soll doch kein reinrassiger Weißer sein. Werde deshalb etwas vorsichtiger sein und ihn schon gar nicht über den grünen Klee loben, bevor der Abend zu Ende ist. Songs schreiben kann er ja, aber das kann Frank Rennicke auch. |

Tonight, under the Perseid Meteor shower, Bon Iver announced their new album, their first in 5 years, from the Eaux Claires stage. 22, A Million is out worldwide on September 30th, 2016. Don't fret though, there's no need to wait that long to hear new music. In fact, you don't have to wait at all. Extended versions of the first two tracks, "22 (OVER S∞∞N)" and "10 d E A T h b R E a s T ⚄ ⚄" are available now on streaming services along with lyric videos (which you can peep below). A 12" LP of these two tracks, entitled '22/10', is available for sale on site at Eaux Claires Festival, as part of a pre-order bundle and, upon release date of the full-length, at select stores.
22 stands for Justin Vernon. The number's recurrence in his life has become a meaningful pattern through encounter and recognition. A mile marker, a jersey number, a bill total. The reflection of '2' is his identity bound up in duality: the relationship he has with himself and the relationship he has with the rest of the world. A Million is the rest of that world: the millions of people who we will never know, the infinite and the endless, everything outside one's self that makes you who you are. The other side of Justin's duality is the thing that completes him and what he searches for. 22, A Million is thus part love letter, part final resting place of two decades of searching for self-understanding like a religion. And the inner-resolution of maybe never finding that understanding. When Justin sings, "I'm still standing in the need of prayer" he begs the question of what's worth worshipping, or rather, what is possible to worship. If music is a sacred form of discovering, knowing and being, then Bon Iver's albums are totems to that faith.
The poly-fi record formed at the congruence of a bold yet delicate sonic palette. These sounds were the way out from the suffocating enclosure and captivity of anxiety. The ten songs of 22, A Million are a collection of sacred moments, love's torment and salvation, contexts of intense memories, signs that you can pin meaning onto or disregard coincidence. If 2011's Bon Iver, Bon Iver built a habitat rooted in physical spaces, then 22, A Million is the letting go of that attachment to a place.

Uff, ich hasse solche übertrieben umständlichen Songtitel, vor allem, wenn sie auch noch so gezwungen rüber kommen wie hier. Eigentlich sollte das egal sein, wenn die Musik gut ist, aber sowas erschwert die Diskussion darüber ungemein. |
