June Carter Cash hospitalized

Country legend ailing after heart surgery

Country music legend June Carter Cash was hospitalized and listed in critical condition over the weekend after suffering complications from heart surgery last week. The seventy-three-year-old wife and musical partner of Johnny Cash had surgery on May 7th at Baptist Hospital in Nashville to replace a heart valve.
Cash asked all well-wishers to pray for his wife at 10 a.m. yesterday, something Carter Cash did for him when he was ailing two years ago. Cash himself was hospitalized as recently as March; he suffers from a disease of the nervous system that makes him susceptible to pneumonia.

June Carter Cash is the daughter of country pioneer Mother Maybelle Carter. She became Johnny Cash's partner in 1967, after writing one of his biggest hits, "Ring of Fire" (1963) -- a song about falling in love with Cash, who was married at the time. They married in 1968, and over the next thirty-five years Carter Cash did most of her singing with her husband. In 1999 she released a Grammy-winning recording of her own, Press On (recently reissued by Dualtone), her first solo album in twenty-five years. She recently recorded her third solo album, Wildwood Flower, which is scheduled for release on August 5th.

June Carter Cash in Critical Condition

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Singer June Carter Cash (news), the wife and Grammy-winning duet partner of Johnny Cash (news), was hospitalized in critical condition Saturday as a result of complications from heart surgery, according to their longtime manager.

Cash, 73, had the surgery on Wednesday at Baptist Hospital to replace a valve, said Lou Robin.

He said Johnny Cash is asking everyone able to pray for his wife's recovery to do so at 10 a.m. CDT Sunday.

"June did this for him one time when he was critically ill," Robin said. "The recovery the next morning was something the doctors couldn't describe or imagine."

June Carter Cash is a singer, songwriter, musician, actress and author.

She and her husband have performed together on record and on stage, doing songs like "Jackson" and "If I Were a Carpenter," which both won Grammy awards for them in 1967 and 1970, respectively.

She also co-wrote Cash's 1963 hit "Ring of Fire," which was about falling in love with him.

UPDATE:

As some of you may know, June Carter Cash had open heart surgery to replace a heart valve, which is a procedure that had been planned for some time. The doctors & family felt everything went well, but June went into cardiac arrest at 2:00AM Thursday. The doctors suspect she was without oxygen for 15-20 minutes. She was placed on life support, but unfortunately there was little that could be done at that stage, & June has very little brain activity.

John was admitted to the hospital on Friday as a
precaution, as his health is very fragile, not to mention his older sister Louise just passed away on April 4 as well, so this is a very trying time for all concerned. He was sedated so that he would have the strength to help his family make tough decisions that are to follow.

A family meeting was held today to make decisions in regards to how long to keep her hooked up to life support, & it was decided to remove her today, which they did at 1pm Central. As of this moment a public announcement has not been made yet.

Having been through this myself almost exactly a year ago, I know what they are going through, so I hope you all will keep the Cash & Carter families in your prayers.

Sorry, ich habe da wohl eine Meldung einfach unüberprüft übernommen. Wäre extrem ärgerlich, wenn da jemand einen makaberen Streich gespielt hätte.

Cash Plays First Show Since Wife's Death

Johnny Cash said it was difficult to be onstage without his wife, June Carter Cash, during his first public performance since her death. Cash made a surprise appearance Saturday night during the weekly show at the Carter Fold in Hiltons, Va., near Maces Springs -- his late wife's birthplace. She died May 15 at age 73 of complications from heart surgery.

The venue is a musical performance center that strives to preserve the traditional music that the Carter family made famous. The husband and wife last appeared there in June 2002 at a birthday celebration in honor of June.

"I don't know hardly what to say tonight about being up here without her," Cash said, according to the Kingsport Tennessee Times-News. "The pain is so severe there is no way of describing it. It's the biggest ... losing your mate. I guarantee it is the big one. It really hurts."

Cash received standings ovations during the concert after each song. Among the classics he sang were "Folsom Prison Blues," "Ring of Fire" and "I Walk the Line," and he described performing again as both a pleasure and a painful experience.

Near the end of the performance, he told the audience that it was "a healing thing to come back here to this wonderful place with you," and that June had loved the valley and all the people. "I wish I could share it more, how we felt about each other."
