ja, aber das zweite war doch schon eine tieftraurige hinwendung zu viel zu glatten Mädchen-Pop-Grausamkeiten.

Schade, dabei waren die ersten Eps und die ersten Platte so wundervoll.

Studio day 1

Hey there

Well I decided to start my daily blogs from the studio right now. Thanks for all your good luck posts. I was really tired about an hour ago but having read your messages I'm raring to go. Thanks for waking me up !

A lot has happened over the past few months. You know the way a dog circles around in one spot before they finally choose to lay down and rest ( well my old dog use to do that ! )? I've been that dog for a while now, not knowing where it is I want to actually be. Anyway the point to my little dog scenario is that every time I begin writing music and recording I suddenly find that I'm at home. It doesn't matter where I am in the world exactly. Music is crazy that way, it never ceases to amaze me.

France is so beautiful at the moment. I can't stop eating those spongy buttery cakes they have over here called madelaines. Seriously tasty. Anyway I better go be a little more rock 'n roll and record some music. x

studio day two

Hey there

Thanks for all your messages. Hope you are all keeping well. I had the weirdest dream last night about being chased by people working for the chruch. They chased me all over different cities in Europe and at one stage I had to choose between jumping over a bridge in to a deep river ( I cannot swim) or be shot. I jumped ! But this is not the weird part, the weird part is that I met Paddy Casey ( Irish songwriter ) in Rome. He was there shooting a film in which he played Robert De Niro !!!!

David Odlum is amazing at what he does. He came up with the wacky idea of me recording myself onto a dictaphone and then recording myself singing along to the dictaphone. It sounds really interesting. If any of you have a minute to spare you should check out David's my space, he has recorded some great people like Josh Ritter, The Amazing Pilots and The Frames.

Well thats it for today, I hope that where ever you all are you are safe and happy.

Thanks for all the birthday wishes x Hello there

Thanks for all of your birthday wishes. One year older, one year grumpier !

I hope you are all keeping as safe and as happy as possible. Laura I promise to stop singing Easy on the Eye all the bloody time if you promise to put up pictures of your nephew Alfie !!

Anyway I'm back in the studio in France ( black box to be exact ) with David Odlum. It's so beautiful here that is except for the huge spiders. I wish you all could see this gaff. It's hard not to make seriously mellow music here and because of that the third album is beginning to sound super spacy which I'm getting a kick out of at the moment. I will put up some rough 'work in progress' material for anybody who wants to download them.

Well thats it from me for now.

Thanks so much for all of your continued support

Studio day three

Hello there

Thanks again for all the messages. I'm getting a real kick outta writing my rambling little blogs to all of you. I loved some of your comments esp the interpretions of my weird dream. Let me know some of your wackiest dreams and I'll try to interpret them. At worst it'll be a laugh!

Today is going slow. Sometimes I want to pick up the bloody piano and smash it against a wall. My fingers are not playing what's in my head, arrrggghhhh. Oh well it's just one of those days.

I'm listening to Cat Power's new album at the moment, it's refreshing, I like her lyrics. I feel drunk when I listen to her. I like when that happens.

I watched 'Death In Venice' the other day. It's such a powerful film. It's still hovering in the air all around me. I also like when that happens.

If you are waking up ....good morning sunshine !
If you are going to bed...sweet wacky dreams!

Studio day four

Hello out there

My oh my I am not alone with the wacky dreams. John your dream about your hair falling out in the public toilets, well I reckon that is about a fear of growing old, or fear of the stress you think comes with age and not being able to control what happens !!

Miki, I reckon your dream is about feeling overwhelmed and the sense of insecurity it brings. Sitting on a plane always means having to hand up control to the pilot. Having a snake beside you signifies a threat, danger and the teddy...well thats the little boy in you that gets eaten up by the situation you are in.

Bloody hell I can talk some rubbish sometimes ! I should stick to singing for sure.

AAaaaanyway on the recording side all is going great today. David is trying to find the perfect snare sound and I'm knee deep in creating loops on a line 6 delay pedal ( for anyone who cares ). I'm so glad I didn't give up on the piano, I finally got my fingers to play the right keys in the end. It seems a lot of the time it pays off to hang in there even though you are dying to give up.

I reckon all 6,730 of us should go for a drink sometime or a walk in a park.

Untill then take care of yourselves

Love

Studio day five

Hello !

I wish you all could have seen the thunder storm here today. I couldn't help but feel really small. It's funny what mothers tell their kids, my mum use to tell me that the sound of thunder was God's tummy rumbling ! She also told me he was a vegetarian in case I thought he might have us for dinner. Weird eh? No wonder I have problems..ha ha.

Today has been a productive day, I wrote two new songs and just recorded another ( guitar and vocals). It's temporarily called 'Sad Old Song'. It's about how an old song on the radio can take you back to a certain place in time. Just the sound of Kim Wildes voice does that to me or 'Take On Me' by A-HA. Who had Morton Harkett posters on their wall ? I too wore 7,465 leather bands around my arm. David says I should be writing more about studio gear like pre-amps and compressors. I think not !

Sleep well

No dreaming, ok ?

Studio day six

Hello

I can't believe we only have two days left in the studio. The album's not finished by a long shot, we have another session in sept and then some over-dubbing to do in LA. I shouldn't say it before it happens incase I jinx it but Kevin Shields might well play some guitar on a song. He's one talented man. 'Loveless' by My Bloody Valentine is such a beautiful album and was massively innovative in it's time. If you don't know it I recommend giving it a listen.

Thanks again for all your comments some were seriously funny. Darren was it you who said your Dad use to tell you that the sound of the ice cream van meant they had run out of ice cream ? Thats class. Adults can be so mean. Glad to hear I'm not alone with my love for eighties music. I remember my first slow dance at a disco was to 'Crazy for you' Madonna. The guy I was dancing with struggled throughout the song to put his hand inside my sweater but I had it tucked so far down my jeans he eventually gave up.

On the work front, we got a great cheesy keyboard sound on a Roland Juno 6, put it through a distortion pedal and some echo. It sounds gigantic. I'm now going to play a quite acoustic song over it and see what it sounds like. I'm hoping it will sound like chaos and order mixed together. That or a pile of mush !

Sleep well

Studio day seven

Hello

Hope everyone is keeping well out there. It's late here and my eyes are beginning to feel like paper weights if that makes any sense.

There is an old dog here ( not me !! ), his pancreas has stopped working so his body isn't processing food properly. He's dying basically. At the same time every night he comes into the studio and sits on the couch for hours. He walks up to me and stares right in my eyes. I reckon he knows he's not going to be around much longer. I know I won't see him again after I leave here. It's sad.

Have any of you heard 'Sol Seppy', her music is so beautiful. I can't stop listening to it.

We worked on a song called 'Half Light' today. I'm really excited about this one, it just came together really easily, without much effort. I sang into a great microphone for this song, it's called a Neumann U47, it's from the 1940's. If you coughed into this microphone it would sound amazing !

Tonight my brain is asleep, it's taking me ages just to write one sentence so I'm off to bed.

Goodnight Zzzzzzz

Studio day eight

Hello!

Firstly, I gotta say thanks for all your messages, I got such a kick out of waking up each morning heading to the studio with a cuppa tea and a madelaine to check out what you all had to say. I won't have much time to write untill I come back here to France in sept which is only 11 days away.

David and myself are heading off to Dublin tomorrow, we've decided to keep working when we get there. So, from a studio in France to David's mothers house in Dublin, it's funny where recording an album will take you. My first EP called 4:35am was made in a studio, a garage and a kitchen, with one particular vocal recorded in a bathroom. Then we went to the very posh Abbey Road to master it. Whatever works. Ya know I would love to record the kitchen sink just to say I had it on an album !

Well I better go to bed, I didn't get much sleep last night because of the biggest amazonian-like spider I have ever seen. I wouldn't mind if he stayed up in the corner of the room but no he had to go and disappear from sight. I reckon thats worse as he could be anywhere.

Aaaanyway untill we reconvene in september take care of your lovely selves

Back in La Studio

Hello there

Hope you are all keeping well. It's so good to be back in the studio. It's warm here and all the bugs are out and about...lovely !

I had a great ten days in Dublin, got alot of songs finished and some new ones written which I'm dead shuffed with. Davids mother is mighty. She had to put up with me playing guitar and keys all day in my bedroom only ever appearing when I could smell food.

Paul Noonan ( Bell x 1) is flying over to play some drums and do some vocals in a few days. If you don't know Bell x 1 you should check out their album 'Flock', Paul's voice kills me...in a good way!

I can't think of anything else to write so I'm gonna go

Goodnight to you all xxxx

Studio day cinq

Hello out there

Paul Noonan arrived yesterday evening. David and myself fussed over him so much, he got the best cup ( the only one without a chip) and the biggest plate for dinner. I had to laugh about it later, I think we were just so excited to have someone come in on the session as it's been just the two of us so far.

Anyway Paul put drums down on a song today. It sounds great. All is good.

I gotta go here, I will write more later

lots and lots of love

My tired eyes

order in the chaos

So I take a bus ride
in the afternoon
you all look so happy, and me,
I'm barely hanging on

This is what you do to me (2x)

Drag myself out on
to the floor
trying to find a little chaos in the order
So I take a bus ride
past your house every day
you never fully leave me
but you, you never fully stay

This is what you do to me (2x)

My tired eyes
are like
lonely stars
trying to find a little
order in the chaos

This is what you do...
This is what you do to me
This is what you do...

Ein schönes Interview, in dem man ein bisschen mehr über Gemmas
Präferenzen erfährt...

"Hi Gemma,
first of all, thanks for accepting this interview, I've been dreaming
about this for a long time :)
So let us to get to know you one more time...Who is Gemma? ;)

1 - Where do you live?

Gemma: "I LIVE BETWEEN DUBLIN IRELAND AND LOS ANGELES. I SHOULD CHOOSE
JUST ONE PLACE REALLY AS THE TEN HOUR FLIGHT OVER AND BACK IS GRUELING!"
(it seems you have relatives in L.A. and Ireland)

2 - How old are you?

Gemma: "I AM 30 YEARS OF AGE"

3 - What are your favorite dishes & drinks?

Gemma: "I LOVE FISH ESP WILD SALMON AND SEA BASS. I LOVE MASH POTATOES.
I WOULD HAVE IT WITH EVERY MEAL IF I COULD. I LIKE GUINNESS, RED WINE
AND WATER!"

4 - How about movies? which one's your favorite?

Gemma: "THIS IS A HARD QUESTION AS I LOVE MANY MOVIES FOR DIFFERENT
REASONS. DEATH IN VENICE IS A WONDERFUL MOVIE AND THE MUSIC ( BY MAHLER)
IS BREATHTAKING, I WOULD WATCH ANYTHING THAT ED NORTON HAS DONE,
SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION WITH TIM ROBBINS, I LOVE ALFED HITCHCOCK MOVIES,
ANG LEE, THE COHEN BROTHERS. THE USUAL SUSPECTS WAS A GREAT MOVIE AND I
STILL LOVE THE GOD FATHER PART 1, 2 AND SURPRISINGLY 3!!"

5 - What are your hobbies when you can have some days off?

Gemma: "PLAYING THE GUITAR!! I LOVE TO READ. I LOVE TO RUN."

6 - Pets?

Gemma: "NOT ALLOWED IN MY APARTMENT BUT I WOULD LOVE A DOG. I HAD LOTS
OF PETS WHEN I WAS A KID, RABBITS, BILLY GOATS, DUCKS, HENS, PEACOCKS,
DOGS. MY EYES GET ITCHY AROUND CATS THOUGH!!"

7 - How about reading? what's your kind of book?

Gemma: "I LOVE BIOGRAPHIES, AUTOBIOGRAPHIES AND GOOD FICTION. A GOOD
STORY. I CAPTURE THE CASTLE BY DODI SMITH, ANY PAOLO COHELO BOOK, CS
LEWIS IS A BEAUTIFUL WRITER BUT HE BELIEVES HOMOSEXUALITY IS A
PERVERSION OF NATURE SO I CAN'T TAKE HIM THAT SERIOUSLY. SNOW FLOWER AND
THE SECRET FAN BY LISA SEE IS A BEAUTIFUL BOOK. THE BIBLE IS WORTH A
READ OR TWO."

*********
Ok then I'd like to know a little bit more about your career...

Since "the roads don't love you", I listened to some collaborations with
the Counting Crows, Joe Chester, Eliot Morris, Anti-Atlas, the cake sale
charity CD...

8 - Could you tell us more? how do you feel about these past projects?

Gemma: "I ENJOY SINGING AND WRITING WITH OTHER PEOPLE A LOT. THERE IS
LESS PRESSURE ON MY PART. I TEND TO OVER ANALYSE MY WRITING SO WHEN I
GET TO SING ON SOMEONE ELSES MUSIC ITS FREEING FOR ME. ANTI ATLAS WAS A
JOY. THEY SENT ME AN INSTRUMANTAL PIECE OF MUSIC AND ASKED IF I WOULD
WRITE A SONG AROUND IT. I DID IT IN ABOUT AN HOUR. I WAS VERY HAPPY WITH
THAT."

I also listened to some great covers like "you came" (Kim Wilde),
"Gigantic" (Pixies), "Lay lady lay" (by Bob dylan, with Magnet)...
9 - Do you have new plans to sing with some other artists?

Gemma: "NOT ANY TIME SOON. I ADORE JOE CHESTERS MUSIC AND WILL WORK WITH
HIM HOPEFULLY IN THE FUTURE."

10 - What are your musical influences?

Gemma: "AH THIS IS A TOUGH QUESTION.
GOOD SONGS FROM ALL GENRES OF MUSIC INFLUENCE ME. I LOVE THE MUSICAL
LANDSCAPES OF SIGOR ROS. I LOVE EARLY MADONNA ( SHOOT ME!!), PHOENIX,
LONEY DEAR, MIDLAKE, GILLIAN WALSH, DOLLY PARTON, MY BLOODY VALENTINE,
THE FRAMES. I MEAN IT'S DIVERSE."

11 - What's your favorite song to play live? I mean, the one you get
most involved in?

Gemma: "TEAR IN MY SIDE"

12 - I hope you remember...what was your first experience as a singer in
front of an audience?

Gemma: "I WAS TERRIFIED. I COULD NOT REMEMBER THE WORDS TO MY SONG. I
WALKED OFF THE STAGE. THE PLACE WAS SO DARK I FELL DOWN THE STEPS BY THE
SIDE OF THE STAGE. PEOPLE THOUGHT I WAS DRUNK. I WASN'T. I WAS VERY
UPSET. I DECIDED THEN THAT I WOULD NEVER BECOME A PERFORMER. I OBVIOUSLY
DIDN'T LISTEN TO MYSELF."

13 - How about the last L.A. tour during October and November? (Hotel
Café & Troubadour) How did the audience respond?

Gemma: "IT WAS A JOY. THE HOTEL CAFE IS A SMALL INTIMATE VENUE. SOME
NIGHTS I WOULD HAVE ONLY A HANDFUL OF PEOPLE. THEY SEEMED TO REALLY GET
INVOLVED. I COULD SENSE IT. IT'S ALL ABOUT SUSPENDING DISBELIEF FOR A
MOMENT, I RECKON. TO SLIGHTLY LEAVE THE HEAVINESS OF YOUR DAILY THOUGHTS
AND BE TAKEN SOMEPLACE ELSE BY A MELODY OR A LYRIC. IT MIGHT NOT HAPPEN
TO EVERYONE BUT IF IT HAPPENS TO ONE THEN THAT'S GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME."

14 - During this tour and on your myspace you let us to preview 4 new
songs (I think my fave is "home"), could you tell us more about the
upcoming "hollow of morning" album?

Gemma: "WELL IT'S A COLLECTION OF SONGS ( SURPRISE SURPRISE). THEY ARE
RANDOM IN NATURE. SOME ARE POPPY, SOME ARE NOT, SOME ARE VERY BIG AND
SOME ARE VERY SMALL!! ULTIMATELY I TRIED TO CREATE A MOOD THAT WOULD
LEAD TO WHAT I DESCRIBED IN ANSWERING QUESTION 13. THE HOLLOW OF MORNING
FOR ME SUMS UP THAT TIME BEFORE HARSH WORDS OR WORRY INVADE THE MIND.
IT'S A VERY HOLY TIME."

15 - Are you planning to go on the road again on 2008? and where?

Gemma: "I HOPE SO VERY MUCH. WE ARE STILL TRYING TO FIND A HOME FOR THIS
ALBUM. IT EASY FIND A HOME BUT HARDER TO FIND A GOOD HOME. ONCE THAT IS
IN PLACE I HOPE TO TOUR A LOT. I DESPERATELY WANT TO TOUR IN EUROPE AS I
NEVER GOT TO ON THE LAST ALBUM. I HAVE NEVER PLAYED ITALY SO THATS A MUST."

*********
Well I do have to say that I really like your voice since "ran for
miles" a few years ago and I keep following discussions on Laura's
website (http://www.gemmahayes-makingwaves.net) and forum since months...

16 - So what's the story here and do you read us?

Gemma: "I DON'T I'M AFRAID. I HAVE ONLY CHECKED IT A HANDFUL OF TIMES IN
ALL THE YEARS IT HAS BEEN THERE. WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF ME IS NONE OF MY
BUSINESS!!"

17 - What could you say to your fans from all over the world?

Gemma: "THE WORD FAN IS WEIRD. WHAT IS A WRITER WITHOUT A READER OR A
MUSICIAN WITHOUT A LISTENER? WHAT I'D LIKE TO SAY TO PEOPLE WHO LISTEN
TO MY MUSIC IS THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME."

Thanks a lot for answering, I hope for you a great success with the new
album and hope to see you on tour soon (maybe in France?). I wish you
also a merry Christmas wherever you are, with your family, friends and a
great new year's eve!!

Nachricht von Gemma:

"Forgive my self-indulgence as I tell you a bit about myself. I released an album called Night On My Side in 2002. I recorded it at Blackbox, France with David Odlum and also at Tarbox, New York, with Dave Fridmann. I didn't expect the album to get much attention so it was very exciting when it received so many honors and was nominated for a Mercury Award in the UK. So, I toured that album extensively and enjoyed every moment of it. I had the privilege of supporting bands like Sparkle Horse, David Gray, Mark Eitziel and lots more amazing people. Anyway, I wasn't prepared for the spotlight and I honestly didn't feel comfortable in it at all. I reached a point where I needed to take some time off. So, I headed home to Ireland, then left for France for a bit. And after I'd cleared my head, I slowly but surely started writing again.

Bla bla bla… fast forward to Los Angeles where I recorded my second album The Roads Don't Love You. The title is taken from one of my favourite songs from Magnetic Fields called "Long Vermont Road." I wanted to make it super slick and even thought about doing a duet with Michael Mc Donald but I chickened out (not that he would have agreed as it was just in my head). I was very proud of the songs on this album as they were pulled out from my gut over two or three years. But looking back, I wish I either went super slick or super raw with the production as it seemed a little middle of the road in hindsight. But hey, no experience is wasted. So, yep… back on the bus. I toured for a while again, ate lots of ploughman sandwiches and sour cream and onion crisps. When I finally got off the road I slept for what seemed like a couple of years.

This all brings me to this moment, today being January 25th, 2008. It's rained for four days solid and I've loved every bit of it. I wish people walked in the rain more in Los Angeles, that way I wouldn't look like such a loser. Anyway, I have finished recording my third album! I made it with my dear friend David Odlum. He co-produced and engineered it with such dedication and love. He was willing to work into the wee hours of the night and morning everyday for months. I must have driven him crazy as I remember him hitting his head off the wall a few times. Joe Chester sang and played some guitar on it and Kevin Shields played some guitar too, which seriously blew my mind. Karl Odlum and Paul Noonan also contributed their amazing talents to the album. It's called The Hollow Of Morning. I stole the title from a poem by Samuel Menashe. It refers to that time, just before you fully wake, when everything is as it should be and you are at peace, something that only lasts a second before your daily thoughts kick in and pull you out of the silence. And the silence is an important part of this album, perhaps just as important as any instrument. Anyway, I hope when, or if, you listen to my music that you make it a soundtrack for your days, especially the rainy ones! Well, I guess that's it. It's weird writing a broad, sweeping summary of your musical life. Words just scratch the surface, like a nail on the side of a mountain. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Single-VÖ "Out of our hands": 5. Mai

(beides natürlich erstmal nur UK)

Und wie schon weiter oben gepostet, kann man bei Interesse hier in ein paar der neuen Album-Songs reinhören.

Kevin Shields hat auf dem Album ein paar Gitarren eingespielt. :)

I also listened to some great covers like 'you came' (Kim Wilde)

Also ich muss sagen, ich habe jetzt ein paar dieser myspace-Sachen gehört und ich denke, wenn ich das da oben so lese, sie könnte da etwas ähnliches machen wie das, was Tori Amos mit "Livin' on a prayer" gemacht hat... in "You came" steckt auch ein guter Song, der raus will.

Hat das mal jemand gehört?

Was meinste jetzt? Das Cover von "You came"?

Falls du das meintest...gibt es hier (legal, weil damaliger Radio-Mitschnitt). ;) Ist nach meinem Geschmack auf jeden Fall besser, da nicht mit überproduziertem Pop - wie bei Wilde - zugekleistert. Die Stelle mit "in a space of a year..." singt Gemma ohnehin viel geiler.

Von Frau Hayes muss was her.
