Titled "Transistor Radio," the record is, as he explains, "an experiment using different styles in much the same way a good radio program mixes different styles." This concept is mostly realized in the sequencing: A Spanish-inflected guitar instrumental segues into an old-timey gospel shuffle and then a swooning doo-wop ditty that could have been recorded in a coal mine. There's a druggy, steamrolling rock 'n' roll song called "Big Boat" that sounds as if it were recorded by Jerry Lee Lewis after a three-day binge, followed by a whispery, jaunty jazz number set to a soaring pedal steel. "Radio was so good in Southern California when I grew up," says Ward, who recently turned 30. "What was special was being to able to get into the mind of a DJ and understand something he loved and why he loved it. It's different when you have somebody who's playing something because a company is telling him to play it. I wanted to say something about that." The chorus on the sweet, melancholy "Radio Campaign" goes "Come back, come back my little peace of mind." In Ward's songs, radio memories are mixed with the records his parents listened to. "If I had to pick one song that made me want to learn the guitar, it was 'Julia' from the [Beatles'] White Album, because of the sound of the guitar. At the same time I was also discovering Sonic Youth, which made me want to buy an electric guitar. There's not much he can do about it (especially with the election being over and all), except to bravely continue his travelin' troubadour stylings. And true to form, traveling is exactly what Ward has been up to lately-- he just completed a short press tour in Australia following a similar jaunt in the UK. Meanwhile, details are starting to emerge about his upcoming album, Transistor Radio. Set to be released on February 22 via Merge Records, Ward calls the record "a collection of songs about radio power-- specifically, childhood memories of a utopian radio power." Transistor Radio, the follow-up to 2003's Transfiguration of Vincent, will contain 16 new tracks and is lovingly dedicated to "the last of the remaining independent radio stations." The set will also feature an impressive list of guest musicians, including Giant Sand mastermind Howe Gelb, erstwhile touring partner Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Vic Chesnutt, John Parish, Rachel Blumberg of The Decemberists, Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley, and Mike Coykendall of The Old Joe Clarks-- who contributes to no less than six of the songs. Ward further exhorts everyone to listen to this album on vinyl but since the Pitchfork office stylus is broken, we'll have to make due with today's technology. mein Senf:alles wie immer beim part track genius: 3-4 ganz grossartige Songs (One Life Away, Four Hours In Washington, Lullaby & Exhile), einige nette Songs und einiges ohne Belang (Paul's Song, Radio Campaign, Oh Take Me Back). muss wohl so sein - dafür gibt aber nur ne 7 ... |

allein diese melodieführung bei radio campaign. das ist einfach eine verdammte, zerschredderte hymne. und wenn dann die trompete im hintergrund trauert. und dieser chor. und der gute vic. einfach ein traum, wenn alle zusammen "come back" jauchzen. ich gebe der platte auch 8-9 von 10 punkten. sicherlich seine beste platte bis jetzt. |

am 13.3 wird vilfer m. sehen. juhui. glaube mittlerweile, dass die platte nicht an den vorgänger rankommt, trotzdem gibts knappe endgültige 8 punkte. höhepunkte. 4 hours.., pauls song, boat song |
