Das neue Album von Michael Penn (Bruder des Schauspielers Sean Penn) ist fertig und soll vermutlich Anfang 2005 erscheinen. Michael Penns Musikstil ist Retro-Pop mit Songwriteranleihen.

s. Plattentests-Rezension zu Penns Album MP4:
href="http://www.plattentests.de/rezi.php?show=225/">Michael Penn - MP4

"New Penn Set Ruminates On Past, Present

Singer/songwriter Michael Penn utilized the post-World War II state of 1947 Los Angeles as the context for his new studio album, "Mr. Hollywood, Jr. -- 1947." The set is due June 28 via Penn's own Mimeograph Records through spinART, marking his first foray out of the major-label system that issued his first four albums.

"I'm hesitant to call it a concept record," Penn tells Billboard.com of the 13-track set. "I was thinking about my father and people who fought in World War II, and the trauma that a war brings to a person's psychology. I always write about the day to day traumas of life and relationships. But I was thinking about someone who was going through those things, and then coming home and having the extra baggage of experiencing a war as well."

Penn experimented with the fledgling tracks via his monthly gig at Los Angeles club Largo, and drafted familiar collaborators such as his wife, Aimee Mann, and vocalist Buddy Judge to assist in the recording process. Former Jayhawks principal Gary Louris lends a hand on the songs "Pretending" and "A Bad Sign."

"Gary was in L.A. and we had a mutual friend who said I should call him up," Penn says. "So I did, and he was up for it. He came by and I put him to work."

Penn will preview the set with a three-week acoustic tour, which he says will feature just himself and possibly a keyboard player. "I hope we get to a point where I can afford to go out with a band, because that would be a lot of fun," he says with a laugh.

Beforehand, the artist says he's scrambling to finish the music for the documentary "The Comedians of Comedy," which chronicles Patton Oswalt, Zach Galifianakis and Brian Posehn's recent tour of rock clubs. The film is due to premiere next week at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas. ... "

über das neue Album:

"I had a conversation with Michael's manager this morning and he said
specifically that he wants to get a song on the site that only
Pennlisters could download and that after that he wants to have the
album streamed. He specifically said that he doesn't want the list to
think they're forgotten. But to be honest, he also sees the list as a
way to market Michael.

Now you may think that it's flip a switch and things happen, but it's
not so. He's not just working with a new manager, but also
distributing through a new label. Nothing will happen before SXSW,
but something will happen.

As to the release - there is simply not a date set. Billboard was
wrong - so there, you're now more informed than they are. Could 6/28
be the date? I guess, but it could be later too. Until Michael gets
permission to use the painting he wants to use as the cover, the date
can't be set. Michael is set on this painting, but the artist died
late last year and the permission is tied up in probate.

If you can't wait, then there's nothing I can do, but in a few months
all this will be moot and seem silly and trite.

Free At Last, Michael Penn Attempts A Comeback With Mr. Hollywood Jr.

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1501076/20050502/penn_michael.jhtml?

Sean and Chris Penn's brother finally emerges from ugly contract
battle.

NEW YORK — The message conveyed at Michael Penn's performance at
Joe's Pub a few weeks back was simple: He's back, and he's got a new
record.

It's not that extraordinary; really, unless, like Penn, you've just
emerged from one of the music industry's longest-running contract
skirmishes. "My father fought in World War II. He'd have to laugh at
the fact that I've been a captive of the Axis powers the better part
of my adult life," Penn said of Japanese-owned Sony and German-owned
BMG at the industry-only show.

Penn's 1989 single "No Myth" ("What if I was Romeo in black jeans?")
propelled the singer/songwriter brother of more famous Hollywood
siblings Sean and Chris into the top 20 and garnered him an MTV Video
Music Award. But a poorly received sophomore effort, Free-for-All,
and resulting RCA Records contract woes soon followed.

Though Penn soldiered on through two solid Sony releases, Resigned
and MP4: Days Since a Lost Time Accident, lightning failed to strike
twice. Worse, Sony retained the rights to Penn's very name: Until
last fall, Michael Penn didn't own www.michaelpenn.com.

Penn stayed busy behind the scenes through the late '90s and
early '00s. He scored Paul Thomas Anderson's "Boogie Nights,"
produced tracks for the Wallflowers and Liz Phair, and toured with
his singer/songwriter wife, Aimee Mann.

Perhaps bolstered by his wife's independent success, and free from
the contractual obligations of Sony, Penn is back with Mr. Hollywood
Jr. The 13-song set is firmly anchored in a nearly forgotten, post-
war Los Angeles.

"1947 is the year everything changed. And it really felt to me, just
as I was writing these songs, that everything that was going on
around me in some way led back to that year. Everything was coming to
fruition: GIs like my father were back from World War II, the
National Security Act of 1947 established the CIA, and the U.N.
partitioned Palestine. America became the first country to be in the
position to take over the whole world, but didn't, but really did."

Performing at the darkly lit and intimate Joe's Pub, Penn's older
material stood the test of time. "No Myth," "Long Way Down"
and "Bunker Hill" sat squarely with songs culled from Mr. Hollywood
Jr. Further, though, his set seemed to comment on his return to a
stage now crowded with acoustic-strumming teenage heartthrobs like
Tyler Hilton and Jesse McCartney. It's difficult to hear Penn wailing
the refrain of "Don't Let Me Go" and not imagine that he's pleading
for his audience back. Still, he admitted later, it's "Out of My
Hands."

Some might consider Penn's return after a nearly 10-year hiatus
brave, or stupid. Or both.

"I don't think of it as bravery, as much as stubbornness," Penn said.

"There's a certain exhilaration at starting over and paying my dues
again," he noted just prior to the performance. "Performing doesn't
come naturally to me. But you know, optimism is a funny thing.

"There's an instrument that I use sometimes called a Marx-a-phone,"
he continued. "It's sort of like a hammer dulcimer. And in the 1920s
and '30s, they would sell them door-to-door. That's [kind of like]
what I'm doing now."

Penn's door-to-door, stage-to-stage tour in advance of Mr. Hollywood
Jr. wrapped up in Los Angeles Sunday night. He hopes to hit the road
with a full band in the fall.
