Reine Kopfsache

Jon Schaffer ist ein Mann mit Prinzipien. Zumindest wenn es um Iced Earth geht. Es ist durchaus bewundernswert, wie Schaffer die Band bereits seit 1990 durch die viel zitierten Irrungen und Wirrungen des Musikgeschäfts führt, allen kommerziellen und persönlichen Tiefschlägen zum Trotz. Konsequenterweise ist auf der einen Seite das Studium der Liste der ehemaligen Mitmusiker eine abendfüllende Veranstaltung; zum anderen jedoch geriet die Suche nach einem (wieder einmal) neuen Gitarristen bei nicht weniger als 500 Kandidaten zu einem Casting, das selbst Dieter Bohlen zur Ehre gereichen würde. Am Ende jedoch zählt nur eins – die Band muss exakt nach seinen Vorgaben funktionieren. Jon Schaffer ist nämlich nicht nur ein Mann mit Prinzipien, er ist auch ein elender Sturkopf.

Wenn man dies verinnerlicht, ist es plötzlich nur halb so prätentiös, dass das 12. Studioalbum der US-Amerikaner ganz unbescheiden "Incorruptible" betitelt ist – unbestechlich, unbeirrbar. Manchmal aber auch durchaus unbelehrbar, wenn nach knapp zwei Minuten Bombast-Geschwurbel endlich der Opener "Great heathen army" mit genau den Riffs losmarschiert, die man halt so über die Jahre bei Iced Earth kennen-, aber auf Dauer nicht notwendigerweise lieben gelernt hat. Allerdings – und das sei der Fairness halber erwähnt – gab es schon deutlich schwächere Ouvertüren im Portfolio des Fünfers. Denn zwar weiß man, was man hat, jedoch kommt die Wikinger-Hommage freundlicherweise ohne jegliches Folklore-Geschunkel aus.

Ebenso übrigens wie das folgende "Black flag", das im typischen Iced-Earth-Stil typischer Piraten-Romantik huldigt, glücklicherweise ohne die üblichen Verdächtigen von Running Wild bis Alestorm zu zitieren. Ansonsten allerdings finden sich Zitate en masse. Nämlich solche des eigenen Schaffens. Und damit würde an dieser Stelle der Verriss seinen Lauf nehmen, gäbe es da nicht zwei prachtvolle Ausreißer. "Seven headed whore" beispielsweise lässt endlich Frontmann Stu Block von der Kette, der mit spitzen Schreien umgehend zeigt, dass er viel mehr kann als in mittlerer Stimmlage zu Midtempo-Riffs zu knödeln. Und prompt möchte man den Bandchef am Kragen packen und kräftig durchschütteln – warum nicht mehr Mut zu solchen Songs?

Ausnahme Nummer zwei ist auf den ersten Blick überraschend. Vor allem deswegen, weil Iced Earth doch seinerzeit auf "The glorious burden" mit dem phänomenalen Epos "Gettysburg (1863)" den amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg umfassend behandelt haben. Sollte man meinen. Denn die Geschichte hinter "Clear the way (December 13th, 1862)" ist wahrhaft tragisch, handelt sie doch von irischen Einwanderern, die bei der Einreise voneinander getrennt wurden und sich plötzlich als Gegner an der Front des großen amerikanischen Traumas gegenüberstanden. Letztlich bildet dieser Song den versöhnlichen Schlusspunkt unter einer Platte, die zwar immer wieder das unbestritten vorhandene Können der Band unter Beweis stellt, der es aber zu oft an wirklichem Mut mangelt, aus dem engen stilistischen Korsett auszubrechen. Headbangen darf Schaffer nach diversen Nackenoperationen nicht mehr. Aber mit dem Kopf durch die Wand will er immer noch. Und das ist im Fall von "Incorruptible" ziemlich schade.

ICED EARTH new album “Incorruptible” out in June, cover artwork revealed
Here it comes, metal heads!

US metal masters ICED EARTH have revealed the cover artwork for “Incorruptible”, their brand-new studio album that’s going to be released on June 16th! The stunning artwork (as well as additional illustrations to every song of the new album) was done by David Newman-Stump from Skeleton Crew Tattoo (pencil illustrations) and Roy Young (colours).

“Incorruptible” is ICED EARTH’s twelfth studio album. Jon Schaffer describes the new output as being on par with the band’s most favourite albums “The Dark Saga”, “Something Wicked This Way Comes” or “Dystopia”. And we can only agree here. The first two new songs will be released on April 28th and April 29th! So keep your eyes and ears open! Just three more weeks to go!
